Authors! Tune in to our fascinating chat with Jodie Spiteri-James from the Australian Society of Authors (@asauthors) on the pod this week. She’s behind one of the ASA’s most successful programs - Literary Speed Dating - and has more than 20 years experience in publishing. We chat about the rise of e-books and audio books, how the publishing industry works, how to get published, mistakes prospective authors make and the speed dating pitch events you’ll WANT to get in on.

Podcasting is personal - and smart businesses are starting to get on the bandwagon, as another content marketing avenue for storytelling, thought leadership and sharing expertise. And that’s where savvy freelancers can pick up work - writing scripts, project managing podcast calendars, helping with ideation and guests. Kaching!

Absolutely loved chatting to @melhansche on the podcast - she’s a food writer, critic, editor and even a bar owner (and soon to be deli owner!) We talk to her about:
+ working in Australia on mags such as Donna Hay
+ what it was like moving from Australia to New York’s magazine industry (and how she had to prove herself)
+ her work as deputy editor on the prestigious Food and Wine magazine in the US
+ the differences she’s noticed between magazines in Australia / the US
+ that time she ate at the world’s best restaurants (in a single week)
+ why print is most definitely not dead!
It’s such a fab episode. Get it into your ears where you pick up your podcasts, and thanks for listening 🎧🎙️🍗🍷✏️🗽

Despite the move to digital, there is still a lot of allure about glossy magazines - and this week, we chat with #HannahJames deputy editor of @CountryStyleMagazine, about
+ what print magazines look for from freelancers
+ how to pitch ideas
+ what magazines pay!
She also takes us through the workload of magazine staff, how it has changed over the years (and why many editors aren’t great at answering their emails). It’s an episode packed full of ideas on how to get your byline in a glossy :)

Are you so nuts about podcasts that your telly viewing has declined? If so, you’re not alone. In fact, Discover Pods’ Podcast Trends Report 2019 found that podcasts are consumed more than TV (66%), social media (59%), and books (75%). Wowsers.

You miss one episode. Then you miss another. And a third. And then... a few weeks go by or a month. You tell your listeners the pod is on hiatus. And although you try, it's really REALLY hard to go back. Podfade affects a heck of a lot of podcasts (because consistency is hard, there's a lot of work involved in making a podcast - and quitting can be really easy when you've got a whole lot of other things on your plate).
If you're in the podfade stage, take heart. Sometimes, a podcast serves its purpose. Or you want to focus on other things. Or try something new. Pushing on when your heart's not in it is never a good idea, right? ❤️

Oooh er, we did an episode with just the two of us this week! And it's all about The Content Byte Summit - what to expect, what to look forward to, and how a gigantic event like this comes together :)

Podcasting regularly is a LOT of work, discipline, time, guest-wrangling - we're not going to sugar-coat it. But financial success can be within reach the longer you do it because you get better at what you're doing, you build a loyal following and you hone your storytelling skills and produce a more professional product. And according to a survey of over 1000 podcasters, those who've monetised their pod were 7 x times more likely to have cracked the 100 episode milestone. Do you agree?

Nuts. (And so not surprised about the true crime thing.)

Keen to get to know the speakers and panellists who'll be appearing at the Summit? Roger that - let's start with the fabulous Carrie Hutchinson, a senior editor who'll be talking about the curly topic of editing in the age of AI.
In the meantime, read our chat with Carrie, who talks about
+ her career highlights
+ her thoughts on using AI
+ the skills she reckons freelancers need to acquire
+ what editors REALLY want from freelance writers
+ why she thinks conferences are so valuable when it comes to meeting people and growing your business
+ and much more.
Thanks Carrie - we can't wait to see you on stage in September :)

#new #sarahspence
Guests come to us from all corners - PRs, friends, friends of friends, stuff we've read... or even former guests, which I believe was the case with copywriter Sarah Spence. So much wow factor here, not least that Sarah went from being a freelancer to running her own agency of 20 people (within 2 years). How do you manage that kind of rapid growth? You can bet we ask the question.
We also talk to Sarah about being neurodivergent and how that helps her copywriting (also fascinating). She also talks about being a boss and creating a workplace that's big on flexibility and self-care (which involves giving everyone a day off each quarter - the same day, so clients are notified, and everyone HAS to do something for their self-care and report back). Gosh I love this. I'm going to talk to my boss (aka me) about doing this :)
Take a listen where you pick up your podcasts! 🎙🎙🎙
Rainy mini break but beautiful
Sooo, truth time people: how many podcasts ARE you subscribed to? I'm scared to count :)
Whew, it has been an exciting couple of days! Thanks to everyone who's given us feedback about Summit, or jumped in and bought earlybird tickets. We are just so chuffed about putting this on for you all :)
I love that Lynne and our latest podcast guest, artist and arts writer Emma Finneran, met in the dog park. The dog park is the new networking space, dontcha know😆
We had a lot of fun chatting to Emma. They do say you should write what you know, but an artist who became an arts writer isn't a story you hear every day.
Find out...
+ how Emma's writing career started
+ whether she still manages to work on her art, or if words have taken over when it comes to earnings
+ how she works with artists to translate their visions into words
+ the questions you don't ask of artists when you're an arts writer
+ what it's like dealing with the egos of the art world
+ and much more!
