"A non-disabled person person is never really gonna be able to portray disability and the feelings that are involved in that and the emotions correctly"
'Everybody Hate Johan' lost points on our Inclusive Disability Representation scale for hiring a non-disabled actor to play the character of Solvor.

"The only kind of main form of ableism that I noticed in the film was her own internalised ableism"
This week's episode with Sam Drummond, Robyn Lambird and Jason Clymo struck up brilliant conversations about the realities of representing ableism and internalised ableism on screen.

"She thinks there's some sort of deficit and she's protecting herself from that deficit"
Throughout 'Everybody Hates Johan', the portrayal of disability (through the character Solvor) is complex.
Often, Solvor defies common misnomers and negative perceptions of disability - including the power dynamics in the relationship with the main character, Johan.
In contrast with this, Solvor often "hides" elements of her disabilities - reinforcing the harmful perception that disability is undesirable.

This week's ReFramed episode reviews the film, 'Everybody Hates Johan'. The film includes disability representation, without being "a film about disability".
There's a lot to love about the representation throughout the film, and a lot that could be improved.

Please help us welcome Sam Drummond to ReFramed, for our final episode of Season 2!
Sam is a Discrimination Lawyer who lives in Naarm (Melbourne), is a self-confessed tea connoisseur, and loves gardening. Throughout his life, he's also been a radio producer, political adviser and lawyer.
Sam is also an ambassador for IncludeAbility, "an initiative of the Australian Human Rights Commission (the Commission) developed to increase meaningful employment opportunities for people with disability, and to close the gap in workforce participation between people with disability and people without disability."
Throughout COVID lockdowns, Sam became a fan of Nordic and Korean cinema. For this episode of ReFramed, Sam chose to review 'Everybody Hates Johan' - "a comedy about Johan Grande's adventurous life, and his long-lasting battle to win over the love of his life, Solvor, who he accidentally blew up a bit in his teens."The film includes disability representation, through the character Solvor.

"We will be really terrible people sometimes, and we'll be selfish sometimes..."
If you feel uncomfortable about admitting that you don't like a disabled person or calling us out when we're being terrible - then there's a fair chance you're viewing us through a lense of pity.
Some of our favourite examples of representation on screen involve disabled characters that are sometimes unlikeable, make bad choices, and are portrayed as complex and real human beings.

People with disability don't all agree on everything, or have the same experiences. Our views, beliefs and experiences are diverse - and that should be reflected on screen to prevent the perception of 'all disabled people are the same'.
This is something we believe 'Switched At Birth' did quite well.
Do you agree? 🤔

Video Description: Emily, a woman with long brown hair, is talking on a video conference with Jason and Robyn.
Please help us welcome the incredible Emily Dash to ReFramed!
If you don't already know Emily, she's an incredible writer, actor, producer, educator and speaker. She's also a disability advocate with an emphasis on social inclusion. Emily recently joined the Attitude Foundation Board of Directors, and we're so excited to have her on the podcast.
Joined by Robyn Lambird & Jason Clymo, the trio review 'Switched At Birth'. The series ran from 2011 - 2017 on ABC Family, and revolves around two teenagers who were switched at birth and grew up in very different environments: one in an affluent suburb, and the other in a working-class neighbourhood.
One of the main characters, Daphne, is Deaf - and 'Switched At Birth' has been both praised and critiqued for its portrayal of disability. According to ABC Family, it is "the first mainstream television series to have multiple deaf and hard-of-hearing series regulars and scenes shot entirely in American Sign Language (ASL)"

When lived experience is prioritised throughout the creation of films and tv shows, it creates better representation and a greater story.
Heartbreak High practiced inclusive casting, by hiring Chloe Hayden to portray Quinni. Like her character, Chloe is autistic - and it’s clear this genuine representation has played well on screen.
In interviews about the show, Chloe has mentioned the creator and writers being “incredibly collaborative” to ensure the representation is accurate. The show also had an autism consultant on board, demonstrating their dedication to creating a character that genuinely portrays the experiences of autistic people. 👏🏼
Have you watched Heartbreak High? What did you think of the disability representation?

Not everything is about disability!
One of the more nuanced forms of ableism that Heartbreak High represents well, is the assumption that disability makes up the entirety of a person. It’s incredibly reductive and frustrating to assume that everything about a person (their job, their challenges, their successes, or even their reactions) must somehow be related to disability.
It’s important we distinguish though, you should still acknowledge disability. It doesn’t benefit anyone to completely disregard someone’s experiences.
However, disability is often just one aspect of a person’s identity. We all have aspirations, interests and challenges that may be completely unrelated.
To summarise - acknowledge people’s experiences of disability, but don’t assume that everything about them is always related to disability.

Heartbreak High has been highly praised for its inclusive and accurate representation - including casting Chloe Hayden as Quinni, an autistic queer young woman.
It’s no surprise that the show represents the experiences of autistic people so well, given that Chloe Hayden shares the same lived experience.
There are moments of pure disabled joy, great support and friendship, as well as moments that leave you feeling uncomfortable. (Sasha really got it wrong sometimes).
This type of accurate representation allows us all to reflect on how people with disability are treated throughout society. It acknowledges how we’re failing people with disability, and provides an opportunity to do better.

In an inaccessible world, people with disability are constantly adjusting and working around barriers. We’re masters of adaptation.
But the real question we should be asking ourselves, our politicians/leaders, and the wider community is - ‘why are we always forced to adapt?’
When over 15% of the world’s population experience disability (this figure could be considered to be much higher), why do our communities continue to fail to cater for our needs? Especially when you consider that accessibility and/or universal design actually benefits everyone.

A lot of ableism and stigma around disability comes from a lack of understanding and ignorance.
Better inclusive representation of disability on screen - including hiring writers, directors and producers with lived experience - will help to break down misconceptions and ableism.
It’s why we love analysing films and tv shows that represent disability, and why this series is so important.

“The authenticity behind the scenes brings so much more to the character”.
Fun little tidbit from this week’s episode, is that Hamish Steele - the creator of ‘Dead End: Paranormal Park’ - received an Autism diagnosis throughout production of the series. Hamish had already written the character ‘Norma’ based on many of their own lived experiences.
This is a beautiful example of why we need more writers and creatives with disability hired throughout production of films and shows. 🥹🥰
