We're celebrating World Seagrass Day today, March 1, with a new story. Not seaweed, but just a short side step.

It looks at why seagrasses in Australia are in decline (hint: it involves people) and the efforts being made to do something about it.

Beach lovers, ocean enthusiasts, recreational fishers and other community members are joining forces with marine researchers and conservationists to restore Australia’s vital seagrass meadows.

The first hub in the new national seaweed hatchery network has been established in South Australia.
The Australian Sustainable Seaweed Alliance team at the Adelaide hub includes Allyson Nardelli, Jo Lane (hub leader), Margie Rule (hatchery network leader), Kriston Bott, Thanh Hoang, Aline Martins, Michelle Braley and Grace Butler.
The network will focus primarily on Asparapopsis seaweed, which can be used in stockfeed supplements to help reduce methane emissions from cattle. Scaling up Asparagopsis production and adoption of supplements is expected to help Australia reach national emissions reduction targets.

What are the food safety guidelines and regulations related to seaweed in Australia?
New research looks at that very question.

New research from Clare Winkel for AgriFutures Australia looks at food safety and food import regulations to develop a seaweed food safety program for Australia. Article by Coretext, for seaweednews.au

Flinders University PhD candidate Adele Mastroyannis will lead research on utilising Australia’s unique seaweed resources for developing plant-based biomaterials, after receiving a top-up scholarship funded jointly by Capital Biotechnology Group (WCBG), Flinders University and the MBCRC.

“The health benefits of seaweeds are phenomenal but have not been fully utilised. My long-term goal is to play a defining role in developing Australian marine bioproducts, by connecting industry with research expertise to drive innovation and to guarantee the sustainable future of the emerging industry,” Ms Mastroyannis says.

“The sector needs to invest in building national talent through industry-embedded research with young researchers such as Adele, to ensure we have future leaders for the industry as it develops,” adds her supervisor, Dr. Yifei Xu, CEO of WCBG, a partner in the MBCRC.

MBCRC’s Connect Educate Train (CET) program will train the required workforce and develop future industry leaders. Associate Professor Kirsten Heimann notes, “For Australia to be competitive and recognised globally in the marine bioproducts sector, it needs innovation, excellent science and business aptitude, and increased investment into research and development, which is synthesised in the MBCRC CET program.”

The story's in the wrapper, not the food. A new seaweed biopolymer developed in Australia offers a non-polluting alternative to the current fossil fuel-based plastic linings to grease-proof your fast food wrappers and packaging.

A new grease-resistant coating for use on fast food wrappers could soon be provided by seaweed, rather than fossil-bassed plastics. This follows new research from materials scientists at Flinders University in South Australia, and German biomaterials developer one • fıve. The seaweed biopolymer c...

It's World Algae Day today, October 12, and we'd like to highlight an innovative new technology being developed by Australian entrepreneur Karl Lawton and

As the world looks to for an increasingly diverse range of uses, Karl's is working to overcome current production challenges to improve the commercial viability of new products.

He has created a new biofilm bioreactor system for growing microalgae with less water and up to five times the biomass density of traditional bioreactor technologies.

Karl and his team are working with the Marine Bioproducts Cooperative Research Centre (MBCRC) to refine the technology to allow for high-volume, low-cost commercial production of microalgae for use in products such as animal feeds and .
