I had the pleasure of watching @melanievugich work on this beautiful painting, which is now hanging at @project_gallery90 until 6 December! 🌻

It’s opening day for BEAUTY & IMPERFECTION at @project_gallery90… My 12 paintings are set amid ceramic work by @platewoman, @turrindesigns and @kate_robi… This animation is by @saffstudioart.
I titled this collection of still life paintings and tablescapes SPRING, and here is my artist statement:
As far as seasons go there is none lovelier than spring in Sydney – native plants reveal their strange beauty, gardens bloom with exotic colour, jacaranda trees sprinkle the streets with purple petals, mild days give way to crisp evenings and morning swims become a routine part of my workdays.
This year, though, spring arrived cloaked in darkness… My work is never influenced by politics and world events, but painting has always been my way of processing overwhelming emotions. As I painted for this show, I was thinking of everyone impacted by the devastating Voice referendum defeat and of beloved friends dealing firsthand with the unimaginable horrors that come with terrorism and war.
I also found myself gravitating towards the brightest and most striking flowers I could find and setting them against uplifting shades of blue, pink and sunflower gold. My goal with each painting was to provide the mood-enhancing distraction that colour and beauty bring.
Pinned to my studio wall, Pablo Neruda’s words have offered daily comfort these past few weeks: ‘You can cut all the flowers, but you cannot keep spring from coming.’
