In the latest edition of THE ASTUTE ARTIST Newsletter, Western Australian artist Wanda Comrie talks about the freedom that comes from managing her own career and not being concerned with gallery representation. Working from her home studio and taking full advantage of social media, Wanda has attracted a huge audience of art lovers who line up for her vibrant still life works.

Along with discussing the fun aspects of the job, I asked Wanda about the challenges of running an art business, the importance of networking, the apps she relies on and what keeps her motivated.

I’ve been loving this story and the fact that has stood by the brilliant Vincent Namatjira and momentarily made Gina Rinehart powerless, but it’s so ridiculous that athletes are now being dragged into the fray… Unless her donations to Swimming Australia are conditional. Maybe we should all be campaigning to get Kevin Hasemann to a gallery! 😉

Last week Cumberland City Council voted 6:5 in favour of a motion banning same-sex parenting books from its public libraries.

Cumberland Council, with 8 public libraries across Western Sydney, passed an amendment to the Library Strategy 2024-2027 that bans books featuring same-sex parents.

Long-time resident and proud grandma Caroline has partnered with Equality Australia to fight for the decision to be reversed at the next Council meeting.

Sign the petition and help Caroline show council that they made a mistake and all families should be seen and valued in our public libraries.

Head to the link-in-bio and sign the petition! Every signature will be delivered at the next council meeting - add your name now!

ARTISTS – Have you contributed to this year’s ? In the latest edition of THE ASTUTE ARTIST Newsletter, I chat to Co-Founder Dave Liston about this ingenious annual fundraising event, whereby artists across the country donate work to support their fellow artists with disabilities. The fun part is that the artwork is sold anonymously, with buyers having to either try and identify artists or simply choose a piece of art they love!

Click through to the Newsletter via my bio link to find out more about the two arts studios being supported this year, the benefits of the show for art buyers, and the best way for contributing artists to maximise the opportunity for self-promotion. And just a reminder that the registration deadline for this year’s show is Sunday 12 May!

PLUS: In recognition of the generous contribution artists make to the Incognito Art Show, and I are offering artists who have donated to the 2024 show the chance to win THE ASTUTE ARTIST 6 Module course… Read David’s interview for entry details!

No one captures the wild sculptural form of the banksia quite like MELANIE VUGICH. ‘This Day Was Bursting with Beauty’ is a standout example of her ability to capture the bohemian energy of this prehistoric bloom.

This glorious work features in our upcoming release ‘Bohemia’ and is 1 of only 2 80 x 80cm pieces. For pricing & shipping details please DM or contact Sarah on:

Thanks so much to .dal_paints for the great feedback… Inga recently completed THE ASTUTE ARTIST 6-module course and also had this to say:

‘The areas that really resonated with me were how to develop better work habits, choosing a pathway that suits my way of working and how to write artist statements.’

Winning for portraiture back in 2019 gave artist the time to immerse himself in painting and the resources to take on a space within , based in Sydney’s Inner West and home to a collective of 40 artists working across all genres.

Liam has now reached a point where he is painting full-time and building an audience mesmerised by his striking portraits and glorious floating bodies. (The painting above is a self-portrait.)

In the latest edition of THE ASTUTE ARTIST Newsletter, I asked Liam about the benefits of being surrounded by other artists, where he sells and promotes his work, and how his former career as an actor has influenced the way he approaches painting.

‘She sliced like a knife through everything’ by … I fell in love with Heather’s work a couple of years ago and have since bought many of her beautiful paintings.

I love the tender way she approaches each subject, whether it’s a little domestic scene featuring her young children or one of the various moths that appeared in her first solo show, held at , titled THE EVENING PRIMROSES and inspired by Virginia Woolf’s novel, Mrs Dalloway.

If you’re not familiar with Heather’s work, follow her art journey via Instagram and keep an eye on the stockroom! 🧡

It was lovely to be invited by new Blue Mountains gallery – – to judge its inaugural Mini Art Prize. Amid some lovely and original small works, a miniature embroidered piece by emerging artist caught my eye… I loved the fact that Indiana conveyed so much with just a few perfectly placed stitches, coupled with the clever use of fabric to serve as water or cliffs (it’s up to the viewer to decide!). I was equally enticed by the title of the work, Loosing Time – in a world where we are all so busy and distracted, the notion of time falling away as we spend time with friends in nature is so blissful!

Indiana was awarded THE ASTUTE ARTIST 6-module course, which will give her the opportunity to work on the business aspect of being an artist as she establishes herself on the Australian art scene. Congratulations, Indiana!

And huge congratulations to gallery owner & curator Katherine Kennedy, who has created a beautiful space for artists and art lovers from near and far. I’m looking forward to visiting the gallery again soon.

In December I finally made my pilgrimage to the Margaret Olley Art Centre, set within the Tweed Regional Gallery… This recreation of the artist’s home is so magical – Sally Watterson, the project’s coordinator, carefully catalogued the 20,000 items found within the replica rooms and each item was then perfectly placed as Margaret Olley had lived with them. Every surface is covered, with ashtrays filled with smoked butts sitting amid dried flower arrangements, sculptures, jugs of paintbrushes, paint-encrusted palettes and stacks of art books and magazines. It’s a beautiful sight and a must for still life art lovers.

Until 28 April you can see Light & Life at the gallery, which unites some of Olley’s most exquisite work with paintings from Laura Jones, India Mark and Mirra Whale — all of whom had a personal connection to Olley. After the show, spend a moment in the Margaret Olley Memorial Garden, a living tribute to the artist and her final resting place.

After working in commerce then taking on the role of stay-at-home Dad until his three sons gained some independence, Brisbane artist Nick Coulson picked up a paintbrush in 2015 and has been exhibiting ever since.

In the latest edition of THE ASTUTE ARTIST newsletter, Nick discusses early sources of inspiration, the benefits of networking with other artists and why he gravitates toward overlooked everyday objects in his calm and contemplative still life work.
