POWER RESTORED IN TIARO

POWER has been restored to thousands of households following a damaging storm in Tiaro yesterday.

Winds up to 90kmh brought down trees and powerlines across the region about 6pm.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesperson said the event may have been a “micro-burst” similar to one that struck south-east Brisbane yesterday.

Ergon Energy crews, helped by about 50 Fraser Coast Regional Council staff, spent today clearing vegetation and restoring power.

According to Ergon’s website, 1130 households and businesses remain without power in Talegalla, Bauple, Glenwood, Gootchie, Curra, Theebine and parts of the Gympie Region.

Residents have been warned that many will not have power until tomorrow.

MINI CITY HERALDS START OF AJ2025

THE Maryborough Showground is being transformed into a mini-city this week as almost 10,000 Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Leaders start to descend on the Fraser Coast for AJ2025 – the 26th Australian Scout Jamboree.

Participants from every state and territory will be joined by groups of international Scouts from New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, South Korea, Norway and Sri Lanka for ten days of touring and activities in the region.

Chief Commissioner of Scouts Queensland and Camp Chief of AJ2025, Geoff Doo is looking forward to welcoming Scouts from across Australia and overseas to Maryborough.

"For the over 7500 youth members and the 2000 volunteer adult members attending AJ2025, the Jamboree is going to be a unique and unforgettable experience that they will remember for a lifetime.

“Over 10 days the program will provide them with adventurous, fun and challenging activities. The Jamboree is an inclusive event designed to allow youth of all skill levels, from age 11 to 16 to have an amazing time."

Such an extraordinary event requires long term planning over many years by a dedicated team of volunteers who have been working tirelessly to ensure a successful and safe Jamboree.

AJ2025 will be structured as a small city with its very own Medical Centre, Concert Arena and Merchandise Shop to service 9500 campers. Maryborough’s population will increase by 50% during the Jamboree.

The event is expected to bring in more than three million dollars for the local economy of the Fraser Coast region, supporting many local businesses.

SIX YEARS DETENTION FOR TRIPLE FATALITY

The young teen at the centre of a triple fatality on the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road in 2023 has today been sentenced to 6 years detention, and will probably never serve time in an adult prison.

The sentence provoked an outpouring of grief for the deaths of Michale Chandler, Kelsie Davies and Sheree Robertson, amid confusion and disappointment over what was seen by most as a lenient sentence.

However Judge Gary Long noted that that the maximum sentence available for the dangerous driving causing death charge was seven years in prison, and that the teen had to be sentenced under old legislation as the offence occurred last year.

He could not be dealt with under the new LNP ‘Adult Time’ laws.

The 13 year old was out on bail and driving a stolen Mercedes late at night when he collided with a Holden Astra, causing it to spear into the path of a Mazda driving in the opposite direction.

2.3 TONNES OF CO***NE SEIZED IN HERVEY BAY

Thirteen people have been charged in relation to the largest ever co***ne haul in Australia’s history.

Urangan Marina swarmed with dozens of police late Saturday night and early Sunday morning when they allegedly discovered 2.3 tonnes of co***ne aboard a vessel berthed there.

The drugs have an estimated street value of over $760,000,000.

The joint Australian Federal Police and QPS investigation uncovered a ‘transnational’ crime syndicate who attempted to land the drugs in Hervey Bay.

Updates as they become available.

POLICE MOVE ON CBD CRIME

Around 700 concerned residents and business people attended a public meeting at Maryborough City Hall last night (Thurs Nov 21).

Organised by newly elected LNP MP John Barounis after anti-social crime and vandalism was brought into the spotlight by local businessman Daniel Beattie, the meeting heard from attendees about city crime, drug users and menacing behaviour that is affecting businesses and worrying residents.

Many spoke about confrontations with drug effected and homeless people who frequent the CBD area, abusing tourists and workers alike, and creating havoc in the traffic at all hours of the day and night.

Police, Department of Housing, Qld Corrective Service representatives and Fraser Coast Councillors were on hand.

QPS Inspector Paul Algie outlined what police systems were in place to protect the public, and what additional measures they had been taken over the past few weeks to curb crime and ease the publics’ concerns.

In Maryborough, there are around 50 uniformed officers on the ground, supported by plain clothes and critical response units, and Inspector Algie said that they were regularly in the CBD targeting petty crime.

“You may not see us in the CBD,” he said.

“But we’re patrolling there regularly.”

“You may not see a police officer on every corner, but over the past two weeks we’ve made six arrests on eleven charges in the CBD alone.”

Locals can expect to see an increased police presence over the coming months, and better connections with mental health services and other departments to create a long term strategy for dealing with habitual miscreants.

CBD CRIME PETITION GAINS MOMENTUM

Local businessman and CBD resident Daniel Beattie is sick of continuing crime within the Maryborough CBD and has launched a petition calling for a higher-profile police presence.

Mr Beattie says that more police on the ‘beat’ would deter much of the daily crime that worries visitors and locals alike.

Regular occurrences of anti-social behaviour are common around the CBD area, including screaming in the doorways of businesses and at tourists, defecating in gutters, climbing buildings, jumping in front of cars, abusing pedestrians and more.

He says that businesses have been very supportive of the petition.
“I have more than 400 signatures already.”

“More and more people are looking for the petition so they can sign it, and I hope the police, the Council and the State Government hear our frustrations and can help us do something about it.”

“Business is bad enough as it is, and the abuse of visitors and business owners has to stop.”

“People need to respect our city, and be prevented from doing the anti-social things they do every day. Maryborough is getting a reputation, and we need to address this before it goes any further.”

Cr Daniel Sandersen said that he had already spoken to the new Member for Maryborough John Barounis and sent a formal letter to the Premier, seeking his support for more assistance with increased visibility of Police officers across Maryborough and Hervey Bay and for foot patrols to deal with increases in public nuisance.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said that he was saddened to hear about residents saying they don’t feel safe walking through the CBD.

“People are being harassed, followed and abused in the streets. People are witnessing regular public urination, defecation and substance abuse.

“How did we get to a point where people no longer feel comfortable in their own community? This is not the Maryborough I grew up in, and we cannot allow this decline to continue.” he said.

The petition can be found at Jasper & Willows Coffee Lounge, Friendlies Pharmacy, Soni Simone Hairstylist, Fraser Coast Fishing & Camping, Earle’s Paints, Big & Bold Fashions and many other businesses.

MAN SENTENCED AFTER KILLING DINGO

Paul Kirkcaldy was yesterday sentenced to 240 hours of community service and fined more than $6000 after being found guilty of killing a K’Gari dingo in April.

The Hervey Bay court heard that the animal let out a "gut-wrenching, distressing noise" before bleeding to death from a spear gun wound, inflicted when Kirkcaldy decided to ‘startle or spook’ the dingo which had been hanging around his campsite during the day.

Magistrate Stephen Guttridge acknowledged that Kirkcaldy had attached a cork to the end of the spear so as to scare the animal, but the spear instead penetrated and killed it.

Kirkcaldy notified Queensland Parks and Wildlife rangers the next morning after feeling guilty, and led them to where he had buried the carcass.

He was formerly charged with taking a natural resource from a protected area and discharging a spear gun in a recreation area.
