" will one piece actually end in our lifetime ? BOFO's in the Wild Recap: Sydney Film Festival only Anime/animated entry, 𝙄𝙉𝙐-𝙊𝙃 (犬王)

Tradition and folktale blended with splashes of homage to 70s power rock. Tragic, karmic tales of the period around Shogunate rule told through surrealism and warped sequences that essentially play like an enhanced live concert experience—only animated. I can awesomely report that the Anime film, Inu-Oh rocked the house in the opening week of the Sydney Film Festival.

Themes of clout and spectacle as power via influence, are explored—wrapped in stunning animation and the unique art style that has been popularised with works by director, Masaaki Yuasa under the Science SARU banner. There's clear commentary on classicism and elitism as it pertains to the audience's relationship with popular music and art. On one hand, the director in the post screening Q&A professed that he wanted people to be "moved to dance", much like the title character Inu-Oh. On the other, some of the most jarring scenes in the film convey how self expression is relegated to serve only when it is a valued commodity. This includes the artists themselves, outcast or not, this is delineated from popularity as a measurable form of currency and utility.

Rock artist, Avu-chan and actor/dancer Mirai Moriyama are cast as both the title protagonist and second lead—bringing these characters to life with a frenetic energy through song and dance not seen on the silver screen since Bohemian Rhapsody.

If Yusa wants you to take anything away after watching this film, it's to try a little harder to understand others (his words *translated, in the post film Q&A). The extension of this message in Inu-Oh is that this is not only limited to the artist, but the art itself as timeless and irreverent.
