ARM Architecture’s refit of the Sydney Opera House’s interior has been named overall winner of the 24th Australian Timber Design Awards presented at the Cargo Hall in Melbourne last night.

The World Heritage-listed Sydney Opera House celebrates its 50th birthday this year with the Concert Hall, its largest venue and home to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra suffering a poor reputation for acoustics.

Sculpted timber panels were introduced around the stage, stall surrounds, and rear walls, replacing the original timber panelling. These new panels diffuse the sound and prevent direct reflections, resulting in a sense of envelopment in the music.

Adam Jones, the founder of CLT Toolbox, has been awarded the Engineers Australia Emerging Professional of the Year Award for contributions to the advancement of sustainable construction practices.

The CLT Toolbox overcomes a key bottleneck preventing the important transition from high carbon emission materials like concrete to low emission timber by providing education and design infrastructure in an agnostic software platform.

Mr Jones’ team is leading the growth of a network of contributors working to make mass timber a more available choice for engineers across the country.

It is not readily known as it is thought of as modern technology, but Cross-Laminated Timber is actually 100 years old this week.

The patent that describes the technology was published on August 21, 1923.

Also not known, and contrary to popular belief, it was invented in the USA, not Europe.

In recognising the carbon sequestration benefits of timber, the recently opened National Throws Centre of Excellence in Brisbane serves as a proven test case for the economical delivery of timber infrastructure to achieve climate positive Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2032.

The GLT structure began life in HQP’s Queensland pine plantation before being sawn at the Hyne Timber’s Tuan Mill near Maryborough and further manufactured into GLT at their Glulam plant in Maryborough.
