The audio community in Naarm has been without an event in 5~ years. That's shocking!

I got my start as a self-taught freelance podcast producer thanks to the generosity and vibrancy of the community, from groups like Melbourne Podcasters.

Now, thanks to the support and generosity of The Channel at the Arts Centre, we're bringing a new event for audio professionals and practisioners to the community.

Next in Audio will be a seminar series for creative practitioners to hear about some of the emerging areas of innovation and opportunity in audio. This series is targeted at a multidisciplinary audience comprising creatives from podcasting, gaming, theatre, live entertainment, installation art and other fields.

If you're audio-inclined, you can stay in touch through our Substack.

What's been missing in the Naarm audio landscape for several years?

It's 2023, nearly three years on from when I signed the Equality in Audio Pact.

I think these words are still true today, and after the disruption of COVID, I hope we can now return our focus to the levelling of this (and every other) playing field.

Being in audio as a podcaster for more than 5 years, and as a freelance producer for nearly as long, I've realized something important...

As much or more than getting the best tape, and doing the best cuts, and grinding away on promotion - it's about the people who give you their time. Clients, peers, guests, this a space where relationships are priceless.

So much of what makes audio work, or not, is 'vibe'. It can hard to pin down, hard to name. The goals, the production, the taste. So it's vital to work with people who you can get simpatico with, on the same page. This can avoid painful misunderstandings and mismatched expectations.

Here's to the amazing people I've had the pleasure to work with, through the vulnerable process of ideation and creation. You've all taught me so much!

Looking back on some previous work, and I'm very proud I got to work with AIRAH to adapt articles of their excellent Ecolibrium mag to audio, and getting to interview some of the leading lights in heating/cooling/built environment.

If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, it's pretty evergreen and available below.

Thanks Phil Wilkinson for opening that door. And Leigh Baker for the introduction.

Big things coming for Here Media in 2023. Producing Season 4 of A Positive Climate, and a new limited series about homelessness and climate change Under One Blue Roof.

But to get the creative juices flowing, here’s the first episode of Art Breaker for the year. It’s all about the top song of 2022 - and if it’s really about the climate crisis.

These are climactic times; the Climate Crisis, the Biodiversity Crisis, Sixth Mass Extinction... The Anthropocene. So how is this affecting the art we're making in our society, and how can that art be part of a response, or even a solution? Join us as we explore music, prose, poetry, visual art and....

Mark's podcasting is largely climate-engaged. Even that which isn't overtly about climate change is still climate-aware and created in that context.

So, he's always on the lookout for great pieces of climate-engaged audio. The Climate Question from the BBC World Service is one, and he talks about what makes the latest episode so great here.

Then, a quick tangent on the pleasure (and pain) of remembering past involvement in projects you wish you could do again.

Spoken word audio consumption in the US is getting younger, and more diverse, and the pie is growing.

It's a great time to start making engaging, relevant, informational spoken word content, from a diversity of perspectives.

No screenshot because was having too much fun, but this weekend PBC Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau joined forces with PBC Wellington for a great joint Zoom meeting.

We talked the latest playlist, "Uncovering the Truth" and had lively, fascinating discussion about some aspects of NZ history I had no idea about.

For those who love podcasts and want some outlet to discuss them, Podcast Brunch Club may be for you!

As a place-based audio company, Here Media celebrates the places we work at, and the people who make them special.

MoveSpace is one such place. Recently they celebrated their third birthday as a creative co-working and arts space.

Mark from Here went along to make an audio time capsule, to capture the event for the future, and also to try and answer the question - why don't we say happy birthday, to places?

https://anchor.fm/mark-spencer/episodes/Movespace-Third-Birthday-Time-Capsule-e13pi9d

It’s rare that we say happy birthday to a place. There’s formal events and excuses for corporate parties of course, but it’s rare for the partygoers to observe, and celebrate, the birthday itself. To say, happy birthday, corporate office, or cafe, or train station - to celebrate the occasion o...
