LET THE GAMES BEGIN -- Five months out from NSW local government elections, the jostling was clearly on display last night at the Inner West Council’s monthly Council Meeting. Having reverted to a public meeting at Ashfield Service Centre after 14 months navigating meetings online, the night was off to a less than auspicious start when a planned live webcast was stymied by onsite “technical difficulties”. Thanks to the tireless efforts of a staffer who hot-potatoed the handheld mike to Councillors in turn, attendees were assured that an audio recording would be posted in lieu of the webcast on Council’s website today. With the Councillors bunkered in for a long session, with mixed lollies and Schweppervescence at the ready, only a tiny number of items had been voted on after FOUR hours. What an extraordinary display of the wheels of local government inaction – sorry – in action. The Public Forum was stacked with 22 registered speakers on important issues affecting residents but had the unnecessary consequence of drawing the Councillors into long airings of concerns outside of their authority. There was also endless to-ing and fro-ing about who’s turn it was to speak. The hefty printed agenda had originally identified 40+ items for discussion. Mid-way through the meeting the ambitious target was streamlined to a dozen items that were deemed “time imperative”. Yet by the 10.30pm self-imposed deadline, before the Council went into “closed session”, only half of these nominated items had been addressed. At play seemed to be the old wounds of forced amalgamation, schoolyard snickering and time-wasting diversions. The elephant in the room was the looming agenda item way down on the list - No.37 Notice of Motion: Mayor to Stand Down - an apparent carry-over from previous stoushes.
