It's not a secret that applying and interviewing for graduate programs can be daunting, especially at your dream law firms.

Here are three tips from Graduate Lawyer Monique Messenger, to help you prepare for the interview.
~
1️⃣ Always write a cover letter. A good cover letter covers three important topics. 'Why you', 'Why the firm', and 'Why us'.

2️⃣ Don’t forget that this is also about working out if the firm is right for you! If you have a particular interest in a practice group, I recommend asking questions about that practice group – the size, structure, type of matters, and so on.

3️⃣ Clear your head before the interview. Make sure you have adequate time to get to the interview, eat breakfast beforehand, drink water, deep breathing and put yourself in a positive mindset.

Congratulations to Fiona, who is celebrating 10 years at McCabes next month! 🎉

"I started off at the firm as a Senior Associate in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution group and was then really fortunate to have the opportunity to move into my current role as Knowledge Manager in 2019. As a commercial litigator, I loved learning all about my clients' businesses, finding out the weird and wacky things people do and helping our clients resolve the resulting disputes!" she said.

"As Knowledge Manager, I love the variety of the projects I work on, finding problems and solutions to them, working with my new 'clients' and continuously improving our legal processes to add value."

We love having you on board, Fiona 👏

Should you apply to the law graduate program you don't think you will get into?

Yes!

Of course, you should be applying to multiple graduate programs, don't put your eggs in one basket.

It's also important to do your research - don't just go for the graduate programs you think you should be going for.

But this is your reminder to never doubt yourself and your ability.

Let's be honest - if you're a lawyer, you know the feeling 🤦

There are 4 types of law students:

1️⃣ To-do lists everywhere. Whether you have notes on your computer or plastered across your room, you can't operate without a to-do list (and plus, nothing more satisfying than ticking something off).

2️⃣ Procrastinator. Anything and everything is a distraction.

3️⃣ Photographic memory. Basically, Mike Ross. Can read Acts, Bills and precedents, and remember them without a hitch.

4️⃣ Most of us. COFFEEEEE.

As part of the McCabes graduate program, our graduates have an opportunity to be involved in an innovation project to be used by our firm or clients (or both!)

Last year, our graduates were involved in developing an exciting new application that helps our lawyers navigate their research 👩‍💻

Think of it like our own digital librarian 💻

Well, because of this new tool, McCabes has been shortlisted in the prestigious 2021 AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list!

In 2020 we placed seventh on the professional services AFR BOSS Most Innovative Companies list (one of only three law firms in the country) with the winning app once again being driven by our graduates and Knowledge Group.

The 2021 winners will be announced later this month, keep an eye on this space!

We definitely suggest having a listen for yourself, or reading the summarised article on the Lawyers Weekly website.

Due to Sydney lockdown, our grads have been working from home and recording Trial By Podcast remotely 🎙️

It's not ideal, but as you can see from this behind the scenes in one of their Zoom catch-ups, they are keeping positive! 👋
