23 Feb 2004 3pm...Blerto's Crossing

This is a pic from an epic outback trip in 2004. We (4X4 Australia Magazine) were doing a trip detailing the new Land Rover Freelander's bush capabilities. It was a more than capable vehicle and comfy, despite 3 of us and all our gear. We had it loaded to the gunnels...
We followed a maze of bushtracks from the back of Moomba (Rabitters Camp) heading to Mungerannie Roadhouse, the only pub on the Birdsville track. We needed to cross a fence line but it had a single, dedicated crossing point. In typical bush fashion, finding that spot was challenging. When we spotted a big rock resting at the bottom of a fence post, well that was the crossing. We pulled up the fence post, crossed the fence line then used the rock to hammer the fence post back into its rightful place. (The property owner had given us permission and loosley told us about getting onto the property.) We were then heading to Mungerannie Roadhouse when we came across a salt lake with a very soft crust. The vehicles had to skirt around the salt lake. I'd been cramped up in the car and felt like a walk...So with my boots on, I stomped my way across the muddy lake. The crossing was completed despite salt lake slush doing its best to capture my boots. We made it to Mungerannie and publican Johnno pulled a map out to see which tracks we took to get to the pub. The route was discussed (he hadn't been out there for years) and a few beers were downed...At one point I looked at the map and spied the salt lake I'd crossed. "What's that little lake called Johnno?" Buggered if I know was the reply. "Well let's christen it Blerto's crossing". And to that we did...long into the night...gotta love the outback!

Great images need to be captured with quality equipment. Love my Canon 70-300mm telephoto lens, a very recently acquired piece of kit. Using a telephoto lens for landscapes allows you to capture micro-stories out of vast landscapes...
