Did you know that 60% of Australians dealing with mental health issues don’t seek help?
This October, the Distil Team is walking in solidarity to support Black Dog Institute's mission to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. Every $65 dollars that we raise will help train community presenters to reach 179 school students to talk about mental health and how to get support.

Celebrating 10 years of Distil.
The year was 2013. With the introduction of the front facing camera, ‘Selfies’ became a thing. Viral challenges like the Ice Bucket Challenge and the Harlem Shake took off for the first time. We were heading out to new Sydney venues; Baxter Inn, Shady Pines, and Mary’s (any food truck we could find). The lockout laws hadn’t arrived in Sydney yet. Our drink of choice: the Jagerbomb.
Noticing a gap in the market, Director Naomi Ross launched Sydney Design Social (rebranding to Distil in 2021), a hospitality focussed design & social media agency.
A LOT has changed in the space in the past decade, and what a ride it has been! Big thanks to our team, partners, clients and friends over the years.
Here’s to 10 more!
The term 'NFT' has been thrown around a lot in the past year – so what does it even mean, and how are they relevant to the hospitality industry? There are already plenty of creative ways to engage with NFTs, and we're only going to see more of this in the future.

Apollonia Case Study
Located in the basement of Hinchcliff House , Apollonia Bar is an imagined Sicilian bandits’ drinking den paying homage to the life, love and tragedy of Apollonia Vitelli (The Godfather) and is the brainchild of Jason Williams.
When we started our collaboration, Apollonia already had a unique and detailed concept but needed strong and distinctive visual language to compliment, and to cut through the noise.
The outcome was bold and raw typography paired with a dramatic contrast of red hues and muted neutral tones to compliment the interiors tale of romance and tragedy. Alongside this, a suite of custom lino-esque illustrated icons acting as visual metaphors of Apollonia’s life.
Through thoughtful and strategic use of visual elements and colour across brand touchpoints in the venue and digital assets, such as animations featuring scenes from The Godfather, and striking social media stories, we were able to communicate the experience of Apollonia - some mystery, some drama, some fun & lots of love.
DISTIL
In August, the Distil team participated in a fitness challenge and fundraiser - No Standing (Di)stil. We set the goal to walk/run 100km individually throughout the month and to raise funds for R U OK?.
Between National Park hikes, ocean walks and casual strolls around the block, together we clocked a massive 1204.5 km. With one of our team members walking/running a whopping 354 km on their own!
We also raised $1239 to R U OK? and want to say a huge thank everybody who donated!
As we enter September with much of Australia still in lockdown, we want to continue to raise awareness around mental health and would love more than anything if you would check in on your mates and take care of yourself.
Pirate Life Port Adelaide
Reminiscing of brighter times when travel and client shoots were on the agenda!
We had the best time down in Adelaide at the end of last year shooting Pirate Life Brewing's two Adelaide venues; Pirate Life Brewing Port Adelaide and SkyCity.
The brief: To communicate the Pirate Life brand story, with a strong emphasis on brewing on site.
Solution: 2 x 60 seconds videos capturing Pirate’s Life fun character and conveying the in-venue experiences by the senses.
We wanted the viewer to be transported to the location and feel like they can taste the fresh beers and food, smell the beer being brewed and mouth-watering wafts from the kitchen, feel the good vibe, and hear the inviting hum of people laughing and catching up.

No Standing (Di)stil!
This August our team is getting active & raising funds for the important mental health organisation R U OK Day.
Most of the team will be walking/running 100km throughout the month but one of our team members has committed to 100km per week.

New name. Same us.

This month marks our 8 year anniversary!
When Sydney Design Social started in 2013, we were one of the first studios in Sydney to specialise in design & social media within the hospitality space. Both the marketing and hospitality landscapes have seen huge amounts of change, and our business has similarly evolved over time.
We took the opportunity to look at who we are as a business, and collectively felt a name change was in order to fully reflect the company we have evolved into.
Thanks for joining us on this adventure & cheers to exciting times ahead!
Manu vs Gary at QBF Eatery | Sydney Weekender
Congratulations to Quick Brown Fox Eatery's television debut!
Gary Mehigan discovered the venue last year, and expressed "it’s this kind of place that makes me feel good about hospitality."
He returned with Manu Feildel to try more of the unique menu on Sydney Weekender.
We know how hard Ben & Emily have worked on their venue since the very beginning, exciting to see their hard work pay off!
