EyeTalk Tip - Using expired makeup can put your eyes at risk! It's easy to overlook the shelf life of your favourite products, especially if you use them regularly. But items like mascara and eyeliner can harbour bacteria and lead to infections.

Look out for the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on the packaging to see how long you should keep your makeup after first use – for mascara, that's usually around three months.

Storing your makeup properly is just as important. Improper storage can shorten the product's lifespan and allow bacteria or mould to develop, which can be harmful.

Every summer, without fail, a new celebrity-approved sunglasses style emerges. Who knew that protecting your eyes from the sun could be such a trendy quest? Last summer was all about kitschy gas-station sunglasses, as sported by stars like Kim Kardashian and Dua Lipa. And back in 2017, A-listers such as Bella Hadid, Rihanna, and Kendall Jenner were all wearing micro shades—styles so itty-bitty they barely covered the pupils. The summer of 2024, however, is all about balance: Celebrities are rocking small (but not tiny) sunglasses reminiscent of looks in the 1990s and 2000s.

The celebrity-approved shades of the summer are a callback to the ’90s and 2000s.

😴 Ever tempted to sleep with your contact lenses in? Think again! 👁️

Sleeping with contact lenses can reduce oxygen flow to your eyes, leading to dryness, irritation, and even infections like keratitis. Over time, this can cause serious damage and discomfort. No matter how tired you are, always take a few minutes to remove your lenses before bed. Your eyes will thank you in the morning! 🌙

World Sight Day, is today!
It's one of the most important days of the year for the eye health and vision care sector. It’s an international event that provides an opportunity to focus the world’s attention on the importance of good eye health and vision care.

This year the focus is on attention on the importance of eye care in young people and inspiring children everywhere to love their eyes. Together, we can create a world where every child has eye health that is accessible, available and affordable.

is about creating awareness that everyone, at some stage in life, will experience an eye health issue. Those of us who can access eye care should prioritise our eye health and support efforts to ensure that eye care is accessible, inclusive and affordable to everyone, everywhere.

EyeTalk Trivia - Understanding Polarised Light and Glare 🌞👓
When light reflects off shiny horizontal surfaces like water, roads, wet surfaces, sand, and snow, it becomes polarised, creating blinding glare that can obscure vision.

Here's how it works:
Sunlight travels in waves, both horizontally and vertically.
Reflective surfaces absorb vertical waves and bounce horizontal ones.
This reflected light causes blinding glare when it hits your eyes.
Only polarised lenses can remove this blinding glare by filtering out the horizontal light waves. The difference between polarised and non-polarised lenses lies in their ability to handle glare, especially from reflective surfaces.

For kids under two, it's crucial to limit screen time from TVs, mobiles, and tablets to protect their developing eyes from strain. We know you can't avoid 100% usage, but being aware of how much time is spent and monitoring that is important.

Avoiding these devices can help prevent early vision problems. For children over two, it is recommended to keep TV time to less than an hour a day and use other gadgets sparingly. Bright screens and close-up focus can lead to myopia and other vision issues.

EyeTalk Tip: How to Check if Your Sunglasses are Polarised 🕶️🔍
Want to know if your sunglasses are polarised? Here are two easy methods:

Tip 1:
Hold your sunglasses in front of a computer or phone screen.
Look through the lenses at the screen and rotate the sunglasses 90 degrees.
If the screen looks wavy, dark, or even blank, your lenses are polarised.
Tip 2:
Grab a pair of sunglasses you know are polarised.
Hold these behind the pair you are testing.
Turn the sunglasses you are testing 90 degrees.
If the lenses turn dark or nearly black, your sunglasses are polarised.
Check your sunglasses and enjoy glare-free vision!

Our Story

From simple beginnings as a four page Suggested Ophthalmic Retail Price List in 1980, the Eye Talk Reference Guide has grown into an essential reference book of more than 180 pages. The Optical Distributors and Manufacturers Association - the peak body for manufacturers, suppliers and importers of optical and ophthalmic products and services in Australia (ODMA) - acquired the Eye Talk business in 2014. The ODMA Eye Talk Reference Guide contains a wide range of important reference information for use in practices every day and is updated quarterly to keep up with the changes and additions in the marketplace.

Eye Talk Digital

Eye Talk Digital is a companion service to the industry-standard Eye Talk Reference Guide. Subscribers can use this service to download a computer file containing the latest product and price changes. When used in conjunction with popular practice management software, this avoids the need to enter all of the price and product changes every 3 months.

Simply download the Eye Talk Digital file, then use your software (e.g., Optomate, Ocelot or Sunix Vision) to import the latest information.
