Bernie thinks in boxes. She has a box for school and one for home. She has boxes for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But when her boxes get muddled - like when a teacher from her ‘school’ box turns up at the shops or when the eggs that belong at breakfast appear at dinner, Bernie is overwhelmed. 🎁

Bernie Thinks in Boxes by and via is a kids-eye look at navigating an unpredictable world as a neuro-atypical kid. Bernie is sweet and relatable and the metaphor of boxes, which is reflected in both text and illustrations, gives immediate insight into her way of viewing the world. 🎁

A satisfying resolution sees Bernie finding a solution that allows her to respect her own needs while also stepping just a little bit outside the box. Neurotypical and neurodiverse kids will both find plenty to take away from this approachable and insightful read. 🎁

Do you ever wonder about the stuff we DON’T know? I Wonder by .bunting published by is a book of questions with no answers - some scientific (what came before the Big Bang?), some philosophical (I wonder what makes us want to be good) and all real head scratchers. 🗣️🧠🪐💥

This is the perfect book to get curious kids thinking. Pick a page and start a conversation with your preschooler who won’t stop asking ‘why’ or give it to a curious 8 year old and watch their head explode just a little bit. Brief text introduces each question and the colourful illustrations are a visual treat. 🗣️🧠🪐💥

Kev and Trev is a new junior fiction series by published by that will have young readers in stitches. Kev and Trev are convinced that writing a best-selling book is the secret to fame and fortune. They’ve even found a publisher … sorry, PUGlisher. The only hitch is that they won’t publish Kev and Trev’s book unless it includes merpugs … and Kev and Trev don’t know where to find any. 📚💥🌊

A stunning picture book about special memories, loss and hope is A TEASPOON OF LIGHT written by Peter O'Connor, illustrated by .c.illustrations and published by and ✨✨✨

Marley has a dream cloth that holds her memories, but when the world changes, her cloth tears in half. Her happy memories slip away, depicted through light and bright illustrations turning to dark, then fading. With the help of family and friends, Marley finds inspiration to bring her memories back.

A story rich in symbolism that doesn't spell out the issue affecting Marley, but was inspired by the author's experiences working with young earthquake survivors. Readers can draw on personal experiences or infer what's happening while reading the story. The beautiful illustrations depicting Marley's journey towards hope and recovery are rich and full of intricate detail, playing with perspective and of course, light! Reviewed by Liz. ✨✨✨

Mawson in Antarctica is the fourth nonfiction Antarctic adventure story written by and published by for middle grade readers. Compelling and fact-filled, but digestible for a modern audience, these books are perfect for enthusiastic readers who prefer fact over fiction. ❄️

This book is not a light read - Grochowicz doesn’t shy away from the realities of living or dying in such a harsh environment (dog lovers in particular should read with caution). But for kids willing to really sink their teeth into narrative nonfiction, this and Grochowicz’s other books fill a niche that few Australian authors are tackling. ❄️

It’s an eye-opening and at times shocking look into a different world - one that will have kids gasping at the sheer grit of Mawson and his crew in the face of one of the most dangerous and difficult environments on the planet. ❄️

A compelling new middle grade about the fallout of a tragic disappearance is Liz's latest read, MY BROTHER, FINCH by Kate Gordon published by 🍂🖤

Wren's brother Finch vanished in the mines several years earlier, along with another girl named Ava. Wren starts high school and Finch is still with her, speaking to her. Through friendship upheavals and constant grief, Wren connects with new girl Freddie, who may have secrets of her own. The story touches on socio-economics too, and the way some cases gain more media attention than others. The compelling first person narrative is so beautifully written and completely hooks you in, driving you to learn more about unanswered questions, including the added mystery of a girl named Joanna who disappears too.

This is a story for more mature middle grade readers, who love a book that makes you feel deeply and really delve into a character's head. Absolutely brilliant, masterful writing - perfectly paced and suspenseful in the best, addictive way! 🍂🖤

A fun new picture book with a cover image that changes expressions as you tilt it (a lenticular book cover! Fancy!) is CHEER UP, BLOBFISH! written by illustrated by and published by 🔵👀☺️

It's the Festival of Fish, but poor old blobfish just won't cheer up no matter how hard the other sea creatures try. But when blobfish returns to the deep, their expression can't help but change! A fact page at the end tells the true story of the blobfish, their habitat and what happens to them when they leave their deep sea home.

A fun story with energetic rhyme accompanied by bright illustrations full of movement, about one of the ocean's most misunderstood creatures! Reviewed by Liz, with thanks to for this one! 🐡🌊🐟🐳🐠

Some *unreal* book news ~ Kate has another non-fiction book out, today!! UNREAL sorts out fact from fake:

There's been a mix-up at the Museum - some of the displays from the Myths and Legends exhibit have snuck into the Natural History wing. We have to sort it out, but how can we tell fact from fiction? Animal from apparition? Megafauna from monster?

Readers will have fun working out which animals and plants are real, and which are not (a shout out to Kate's fave creature, the drop bear!). With gorgeous illustrations by the talented and published by it's both educational and fun. Congrats Kate! 🐻 🌿 🐨

Liz has been reading the fascinating and true tale How to Move a Zoo, written by - yes, that's OMP's own Kate! - illustrated by Owen Swan and published by 🐘🔴🐘

This non-fiction picture book is a snapshot of a moment in Sydney's history that seems hard to believe, when in 1916 some zoo animals had to be taken through the streets from the old zoo at Moore Park to Taronga Zoo. In particular, Jessie the elephant couldn't be taken by vehicle so was walked through the city then transported by ferry, a sight that likely won't be repeated! With beautiful illustrations in grey, pastel and sepia tones, Owen Swan's art lends the perfect historical feel. The story is beautifully told and infused with the feelings you'd expect from such an unusual mission, from trepidation to surprise to satisfaction. 🐘🔴🐘

Mama Bear and Me is another gorgeous and popping-with-colour tribute to family love in all its forms from published by at 🐻🍎💛

Mama bears can be many things: full of grumbly growls one minute, soft cuddles the next. As is her way, Beer shows us that love wears many faces. It may not be all smiles all the time (some Mama bears don't like being wakened from hibernation) but it is ultimately just what we need. A fitting tribute to single parents and the toddlers who love them. 🐻🍎💛

A beautifully presented picture book about feelings that Liz has been reading is GREY by illustrated by and published by It uses colour to unpack emotions, for little readers who are growing in self awareness.

When a child doesn't feel sunshine yellow or treetop green, they recognise they're feeling grey and not themself. The text goes on to reassure that our feelings are a spectrum, the range of colours and feelings are always there, and it's okay to feel grey sometimes - the other colours will return. The poetic prose works so well with the striking illustrations, enhanced by the use of clever cutouts (a fave and must-see - the tea cup page!!). Colour and texture are played with throughout in this masterful look at understanding big feelings. ☁️🍎☀️🌳🔵
