Virgil Abloh, aged 41, died on 28th November after privately battling a rare form of cancer since 2019. Abloh, founder of Off-White and Menswear Creative Director of Louis Vuitton, took his designs from the couturier’s Milan workshop and into both Paris and New York Fashion Weeks, and in-turn revolutionised the fashion industry, elevating streetwear from ‘basics’ into its luxury status. Abloh redefined the meaning of fashion designer; having completed previous studies in engineering and architecture, he also dabbled sporadicly in DJ-ing, and producing art and furniture. He was known as a light in the fashion industry, with eyes set on breaking down boundaries for the way art can be made. Abloh was a revolutionary — and now a martyr — in the face of diversity and inclusivity within fashion, values he believed were missing from the industry.

As spoken by Edward Enninful, Editor-in-Chief of British Vogue, Abloh wanted to “open the door to art and fashion for future generations, so that they—unlike himself—would grow up in a creative world with people to mirror themselves in”.

From Daniel to Matthieu.

BOTTEGA VENETA has just announced its newly appointed Creative Director, Matthieu Blazy, will be replacing Daniel Lee.

Having only joined the couture brand last year there is a real essence of rebirth and renewal as we enter into this new era, it’s about time this industry has some turn-over, especially into the hands of newer, younger, designers.

Blazy was previously head designer at Maison Margiela Artisanal, back in the “10’s” where his work articulated much of the houses aesthetic while still maintaining the Blazy spirit. Positioning himself as right-hand-man to Lee was a power-move in being able to understand both designer and house for when his reign was to come.

Lee’s departure was sudden, scandalous and shocking, but as second in command, Blazy must have known the director was searching for something more. It’s no coincidence Lee kept Blazy so close.

Needless to say, this new venture has us all excited to see where BOTTEGA VENETA will take us next.

Shorts with shirts?

As you may or may not have recently seen, men’s shorts — shorts of all shape, size, and colour — are making a come back, majorly.

The question is: are shorts formal?

I recently wore a pair of black trouser shorts (knee length, and middle creased) to work. They were sold as a formal pair of shorts, suitable for day and night events, and I have previously worn them to the opening night of a show. But my work informed me they weren’t formal enough for their “formal dress code”, a code regularly broken by staff members wearing jeans, singlets and runners.

My mind immediately went to the 2021 Met Gala; now I know that using this horrendous event as a reference sounds sacrilegious, but the Met being the notorious pinnacle of formal fashion seemed a sound enough medium to use as evidence of shorts being formal.

So do you think American actor and model, Evan Mock, was underdressed at the Met? And what about American actor, Lee Pace?

We’re interested to hear what you think. Send us a message or comment below.

MEET Ezka Cosmetics]

“Ezka is our baby” is how and described what their new cosmetics brand means to them. The new Melbourne-based cosmetics brand, Ezka Cosmetics, has just released their first line of Australian-made, organic, sustainable skin-care products. “Cosmetics are for everybody” is how they lead on to admit that Devlin’s boyfriend now cannot say no to his daily routine with Ezka products. They even added a gender-neutral bodice as their logo to keep the brand accessible to anyone who cares about their skin and the environment. Both founders have commented on their own personal struggles to find skin-care products that are guilt free, all natural and effective, resulting in their new endeavour to make these hyper-conscious products readily available to the wider community.

Brace Yourself for Corsets

A very spooky trend, suitable for Halloween.

As many of you may or may not have already noticed, corsets are making a comeback as a suitable piece or attire. Unfortunately, that is not the case.

Wearing a corset - especially one bought off , or any other mass-produced, fast-fashion brand - is a difficult outfit choice to manoeuvre.

My three suggestions for how to wear a corset successfully are: 1. If it was cheap, don’t wear it, 2. If it sits below your bust, don’t wear it, and 3. Don’t buy one.

OUTFIT REPEATING WITH A PURPOSE

If you’re anything like me, Sydney's latest 100-day lockdown has come with its fair share of online retail therapy. There’s nothing quite like the serotonin hit one receives when Australia Post texts you those five little words: ‘Your parcel is coming today.’ For me, it was a pair of boots that saw one or two coffee trips but have since sat idle on a shelf with the promise of ‘I’ll wear you after lockdown.’ I think we can be forgiven for a few impulse purchases during what has been an incredibly unusual and unsettling period of time, but there’s nothing like a pandemic to shed light on your own consumer habits…

Jacquemus Beauty?

French designer, Simon Porte Jacquemus, is said to be signing a deal with Spanish fragrance brand, Puig, as Jacquemus’ attempts to conquer the beauty world.

Jacquemus has previously dabbled in several markets, furthering his brand and aesthetic, including Jacquemus cermamics, cafes, restaurants and most notably, his pop-up flower shop.

Puig is relying on it’s new partnership to recover from last years pandemic-induced profit decline, with expectations to be reaching $4 Billion within the next 5 years.

With support from some of the world’s most notorious models and beauty influencers - such as the Hadid sisters - it comes at no surprise that Simon Porte Jacquemus is finally joining the beauty and fragrance scene.

Trackie-Chic or Trag-ic?

Nothing proves humanity’s resistance to change quite like post-pandemic streetwear. While people are enjoying their new-found freedoms, they’re yet to free themselves from their lockdown wardrobes.

Many runways today will feature one or two specific loungewear pieces that have been converted into chic streetwear. Kendall Jenner sported an all-Adidas tracksuit get-up for NYFW, but is this fashion choice what we should be expecting from such a prolific fashion icon/celebrity/model?

Additionally, that Vetements tracksuit pictured above is heinous. I wouldn’t wish that outfit upon my worst enemy.

Sunday Thoughts:

A common fashion occurrence that has been round for quite some time, but does this practice kill the very essence of fashion? Does constantly reusing old styles and pieces defeat the purpose of ‘new collections’?

Well, what are your thoughts? We want to hear what you think about ‘Renting”. Let us know in the comments bellow.

Alexander McQueen SPRING 2022 R-T-W

Sarah Burton has, once again, made Lee Alexander McQueen a very proud man. Located on a rooftop in East London under a collapsible and reusable bubbled dome, designed by Similjan Radic, the Alexander McQueen runway depicted what was visible from out of the design house's windows — a view Burton and the McQueen team became familiar with during the pandemic. We may recognise Radic, a Chilean architect of Croatian descent, from his work creating the 2014 Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London. However, for McQueen, Radic has played a much bigger role, having also designed McQueen’s Old Bond Street Store in London. The Radic “cloud”, per-se, was used as a medium to bring the audience together in one space away from the elements, but where their view, including views of Saint Paul’s Cathedral, would further this collection…

THE MET GALA: THE UNDERBELLY

It’s fashion's favourite night out, the most iconic set of stairs and all the glitz and glamour that comes with it: the Met Gala. The 2021 theme was ‘America: A Lexicon of Fashion’, and whilst it wasn’t surprising that most designers did not follow the theme, it was astounding how many European fashion houses dominated centre stage. With the amount of attention the ‘Met’ receives, the value of this global exposure cannot be ignored. However, with designers paying over a quarter of a million dollars per table, it is not easily accessible. It is ironic then, that Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton, was caught saying they were looking forward to "a real showcase of young talent". Please show me an upcoming designer that has hundreds of thousands of dollars to spare for a table, and not to mention the cost of a Met worthy garment. So I guess it is understandable why huge houses such as Versace are continuing to dominate the carpet each year.

There were, however, new faces that gave the gala a refreshing taste of individuality…
