"...This gorgeous Barossa Shiraz used here sees small open fermenters followed by gentle basket pressing and then maturation in quality French oak for two years. The team’s usual procedure is destemming the grapes, a week on skins and hand-plunging twice daily. Although the wine is named ’50-Year-Old’, some of the vines exceed that by a considerable distance. Deep red in colour, there is a mix of red and darker fruits on the nose, especially blackberries, with graphite, chocolate, warm bitumen, leather, cloves and bay leaves. Some good complexity, even at this early stage. The texture is supple and seamless with the wine finishing with delightfully soft tannins. Some very chocolatey notes to conclude. Deceptively long, the finish would simply not go away (that is a good thing, a very good thing). Loved this. A stunning Barossa Shiraz with ten to fifteen years ahead of it, over which time, expect the score to rise even further..." 95 POINTS, Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.

Team Suntory, whose brands include Jim Beam bourbon and Laphroaig Scotch whisky, reckons drinkers in Europe are ready for a new tipple: Japanese gin made with cherry blossom and other exotic ingredients.
Roku, which means six in Japanese, is distilled in Osaka. It is made with Sakura flower, sakura leaf, yuzu peel, sencha tea, gyokuro tea and sansho pepper, for a spicy finish. Each Japanese botanical has been harvested in accordance with the concept of shun, which means they are only harvested at peak flavour.

5 Fun facts about Whisky.

1. Each year during maturation around 2% of the whisky is lost due to natural evaporation. This lost whisky is called the Angel’s Share.
2. No matter how peaty your whisky is, once you open the bottle it will start to lose its peatiness due to oxidation.
3. Have you ever noticed that the trees around any distillery are black? This is a disease caused by the spirit fumes from the nearby distillery. Luckily it has no negative effect on the tree itself, just the colour.
4. Scotch is distilled twice, Irish three times. There are some exceptions in both countries, but this is the general rule of thumb.
5. Single malt whiskies may have been in several casks. Single malt whisky is a product of a single distillery, but most single malts are a blend of several casks.

This may not be the most revered expression of Laphroaig out there, but don’t take anything away from this entry-level release until you've tried it. The familiar and expected aroma of peated smoke sets the stage while caramelized pecans and an overall nuttiness entice you to take a sip. Orchard fruits refresh the palate, while a wholewheat savory tone balances and stabilizes. Smoky? Of course. Delicious? Absolutely.

Deep, minty, utterly substantial full-bodied blend of Coonawarra & Clare Valley Cabernet, with leagues of dark berry flavour and then a long, drying finish. Inelegant, unquestionably, but pretty compelling in the sheer volume of fruit. Just misses a gold because of the minty edge, but the impact is bang on for this price point. Why is it so much better than the Shiraz? It’s just more savoury, which switches it from a ‘yeah, nah, that’s a bit much or me’ to ‘well this has some flavour doesn’t it’. Best suited to lamb chops and decent BBQ sauce. Taylors Jaraman Cabernet Sauvignon 2020. Best drinking: now and for the next fifteen years.

Look at this beauty: Château Tanunda 50 Year Old Vines.

Medium to deep crimson/purple. Powerfully intense aniseed, blackberry, mulberry and blueberry fruit aromas, with ginger, mint notes.
Vigorous and fleshy with generous blueberry, blackberry flavours, excellent mid-palate richness and plentiful brambly-chocolatey tannins.
The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging twice daily to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins.
This is followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned French oak prior to 24 months maturation.
The grapes from this wine come from a selection of Barossa old vine vineyards planted in the 1960s and 50s.
These low-yielding “Barossa Old Vines” were planted before 1970 and are now fully mature on their own original rootstock. They have a root structure and trunk thickness that encourage diversity of flavour and character. Their worthiness has been proven over many vintages, consistently producing the highest quality fruit.

And, worse, they have no one to blame but themselves as the award is decided by a panel of top sommeliers from – you guessed it – France.
No doubt our French friends would have handled the competition results with their usual flair and refinement, but it is hard to believe that behind the scenes, there might not have been just the slightest gritting of teeth and furrowed brows.
