CEO Chris Freeland AM has written to the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) CEO Lee White to express CPA Australia’s support for IFAC’s recent statement on the need for additional engagement on IESSA.

The International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) recently finalised its International Ethics Standard on Sustainability Assurance (IESSA).

As Mr Freeland notes in his letter, the feedback CPA Australia has received from Australian and New Zealand stakeholders, including our submission to the IESBA, highlights significant disappointment with the IESSA's complexity. The IESSA remains overly intricate and lengthy, raising doubts about its practicality for implementation. This complexity will hinder the ability of small-and medium-sized practices to adopt the standard effectively, which undermines its intended purpose.

CPA Australia fully supports Mr White’s call for collaboration between IFAC and IESBA to address the practical challenges of the standard. The proposed summit represents an excellent opportunity for constructive dialogue among key stakeholders. By bringing together representatives from IFAC, IESBA and practitioners, we can work towards refining the IESSA to ensure it is both fit for purpose and grounded in a principles-based approach.

Today (Monday, 23 December 2024), the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) released its finalised guidance to the Tax Agent Services (Code of Professional Conduct) Determination 2024.

CPA Australia looks forward to working with the TPB in 2025 to broaden the understanding of these documents, as well as to develop additional guidance products to help tax practitioners comply with the new obligations, particularly smaller practitioners for whom the regulations start from 1 July 2025.

Together with the Determination guidance, the TPB has also released its finalised guidance on beach reporting. These amendments were introduced to the Tax Agent Services Act 2009 by the Treasury Laws Amendment (2023 Measures No. 1) Bill 2023. Breach reporting obligations commenced on 1 July 2024.

If you’re trying to progress your career there are several ways to get ahead. Here’s what you need to know πŸ‘‡

1️⃣ Uncover the β€˜hidden’ jobs market

Recruitment specialist Richard Triggs believes people can find (and land) jobs that are not advertised, or even create new ones for themselves. πŸ’Όβœ¨

His top tips? People should think about their employers of choice, identify who the decision-makers are within those organisations, πŸ—£οΈπŸ€ then approach three every day for a meeting.

2️⃣ Elevate your technology marketability

Automation is changing the role of finance professionals, πŸ€–πŸ“ˆ but how can you leverage technology to benefit both your organisation and career?

According to Stephannie Jonovska FCPA, you should first determine your objectives, then build some foundational skills that could be leveraged in AI use. πŸ› οΈπŸ’‘

3️⃣ Get clear about what you want

Career coach Brian Klindworth says you can find purpose and joy through work in two ways: by doing something you love ❀️ and by delivering impact that is meaningful. 🌟

Life designs and job designs are two tools that can help you discover what meaning looks like for you at work. πŸ“πŸ”

These are just three ways you can progress your career. πŸš€
