It is with much regret, and after trying to work out many different options, that I must announce that The Phantom will no longer be broadcasting from IPL Radio.

It has been a great 4 years, and The Jukebox has been a very popular and well received, entertaining as well as informative rock n roll radio show.

There have been many great specials presented over the last four years, from one show specials such as The Buddy Holly/Ritchie Valens/Big Bopper tribute shows, the Elvis specials, the Australia Day specials, the six hour live crossovers with Santa every Christmas Eve, etc, to the six part History of Motown special, and the massive, six month long History of Rock n Roll series.

But the best part of bringing the Jukebox to the world has been the involvement of you, the listeners. Your requests, your letters seeking advice during The Love Doctor segments, your phone calls and the recordings some of you made to be used as stings during the shows. Thankyou

Unfortunately circumstances have changed, and The Phantom is no longer available to bring The Jukebox to the air every week. Phantom Junior, who is 4 years old, spends every second week with The Phantom and can't be up so late at night. So The Phantom has had to make the difficult decision to close The Jukebox show.

IPL Radio has been a tremendous opportunity for The Phantom, and the support given, friendships built, and experience has been greatly appreciated.

Please continue to listen to IPL Radio, and support the many great presenters who volunteer their services to the community. They are a great team, and the shows are enlightening.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank everyone, listeners, sponsors, and IPL team.

Until The Phantom returns in the future, rock on!

Australian music icon Frank Ifield has sadly passed away, aged 86

FRANK IFIELD 1937 – 2024

Frank Ifield, the Australian singer who became a household name in Britain before the Seekers, the Bee Gees and the Easybeats, died at age 86 on Saturday night.

A long-time resident of the Sydney suburb of Dural, Ifield had the distinction of achieving four number one UK hits; three of them before the rise of the Beatles, whom he allowed to support him in concert after the personal intervention of manager Brian Epstein.

The first of those hits was a 1962 remake of I Remember You, a song best remembered for its performance by Dorothy Lamour in the film The Fleet’s In, and said to be about writer Johnny Mercer’s affair with a young Judy Garland.

It topped the British charts for seven weeks and proved to be a perfect signature song, taking him around the world (reaching the American top five). It was known for Ifield’s falsetto and a slight yodel, and gave him a profile that saw him star in his own 1965 feature film, Up Jumped A Swagman.

Frank began recording in Australia in 1953 and in 1957 created Whiplash, which became the title song to the British/Australian television series. Though born in England, he returned there in 1959, presenting himself as an Australian.

He twice entered Eurovision, coming in second in the 1962 heat. He sang at the Grand Ol’ Opry in Nashville, introduced by his hero Hank Snow.

In 1991 Frank was in the British top 40 with The Yodelling Song, a remake of his former number one She Taught Me How To Yodel, which the Queen Mother once requested at a Royal Command Performance.

Back in Australia, Frank contracted pneumonia. Surgery in 1986 affected his ability to sing. However, he remained active in Australian music and actively supported a range of young singers in the country field. A duet recording of I Remember You with Nicki Gillis was a hit, enabling her to tour the UK.

Over the last decade Frank has appeared on stage with Seeker Keith Potger (and Nicki Gillis and Wayne Horsburgh), incorporating songs and stories about their British landmark hits.

As regular listeners of The Jukebox know, I always end my shows with a version of Unchained Melody. Frank Ifield sang a beautiful version of the song, and here it is. Enjoy.

Learn about that and much more in The History of Rock special, the biggest radio special in radio history, THE history lesson you WILL love.

Hear the hits of 1968 by The Beatles, John Fred and the Playboys, Aretha Franklin, Lemon Pipers, American Breed, Frankie Lymon, Pink Floyd, First Edition, The Monkees, Blue Cheer, Bill Graham, The Delfonics, Sly & The Family Stone, Simon & Garfunkel, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, The Troggs, Janis Joplin, Dionne Warwick and MANY MORE!
