Redhead Forward Observation Post (aka Redhead Fort) was built on Little Redhead Point several miles south in direct line of Shepherds Hill and Fort Wallace.

With Redhead being several hundred feet above the beach, the 9.2” guns were able to cover the beach below with ease. As the 9.2” gun had a long trajectory at 45 degrees, these shells could be lobbed over the headland.

After the war, the site was converted into a Trigonometric Station.

Today only what remains of this Fort is the remains of what is
believed to be corrugated iron lined trenches, a machine gun nest and ammo storage dump (in a cave nearby at the Scout Camp).

Belmont Tank Ditch, better known these days as Cold Tea Creek was a major defense installation constructed by army and civilian units in late 1942 as the southern perimeter defence of the port of Newcastle.

At the time it was anticipated that the Japanese may attempt a beach landing between Belmont and Swansea Channel.

The ditch was designed to prevent enemy tanks proceeding north to Newcastle. It replaced the winding Cold Tea Creek which linked the Lake to Belmont Lagoon.

Two interlocking rows of tank traps were located on the southern bank of the Ditch to obstruct the movement of tanks.

Twenty seven acres of defense scrub land to the immediate south of the ditch were cleared to deny cover to enemy forces.
