"Yes, Australia has an increasingly diverse population, but the image of 'the average Australian' has not changed. Anyone can adopt or shift to the 'model Australian', a laid-back, rooting for the underdog and hardworking Ozzy, but not everyone can be White."

"I crossed the floor, which means literally walking across and sitting opposite to the rest of my party. I knew that by doing that I could be expelled [from the Labor Party], but for me, and like many people out there who had seen this genocide live-streamed on their phones, who have had enough of the killing, who wanted our government to be more bold and brave and call it out for what it is—the least symbolic thing we could do was recognise the State of Palestine."

"I knew that I needed to look myself in the mirror and be able to say wholeheartedly that I voted for principles."

Pelican spoke with Senator Fatima Payman last Thursday about all things politics, Palestine and Pirates of the Caribbean. Read the full interview online now:

At the centre of all things ā€˜art’ and ā€˜creation,’ a discussion is brewing: Are societal structures and events stifling creators into producing what we might call ā€˜fake art’?"

"Tasked with responding to the world’s most vulnerable people, those who have lost families, been removed from their community, persecuted by the militia of authoritarian regimes, deceived and tormented by smugglers they had no choice but to trust, and left to fend alone in a country that deems them unworthy of counting.

To be face to face with their grief is an experience that grates at your humanism, but also your helplessness and frustration at the infrastructure of our society that allows some people to exist in a vacuum, cast off the grid, stripped of their identity and excluded from the algorithm that makes our world beat."
