How old do you need to be to go to prison? Here in WA, the answer is just 10, despite the global consensus that the age of criminal responsibility is 12 to 14. Campaigner Ronald bin Swani wants to change that, with your help.

Dr Tracy Redhead is a composer, singer-songwriter and author and a leading figure in Transmutable Music – recorded music reinvented by new technologies.

Tracy: "The digitisation of music has changed the way we distribute and experience recordings. But recorded music is still just a fixed thing in time. New technologies mean music can be completely transformed by data: recorded music becomes Transmutable – and that opens up new creative ways for music to be made and heard."

How does data transmute music? Is that something we want? "Don't worry – I don't want to take traditional recordings away from anyone! But what if a composed piece of music could change depending on where or when you're listening to it, what the weather is, or what you're doing? Before recording technology was invented, music was a purely living thing that changed every time it was played. Ironically, new technology could help us rediscover an aspect of recorded music that we love at concerts."

How do you feel about being a TEDxKings Park Speaker? "I must admit, I am feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement – similar to how I feel about technology itself. While I love the possibilities, I also worry about the ethical implications. It's important we understand and discuss the impact of emerging technologies."

Dr Jessica Kretzmann is researching techniques which could revolutionise treatments of diseases like cancer – and avoiding traditional chemotherapy side-effects. She's a Fellow of the Forrest Research Foundation.

"I want the audience to understand that we can do amazing things with nanotechnology, and in particular my field, which is DNA origami. I've developed a new nanoparticle shape which has delivered gene therapies into breast cancer models. It's a really exciting time – we're developing a whole new way of curing people."

Jessica knows first-hand how important role models and mentors are. "Growing up in rural WA where you never met a scientist, I know how powerful role models and mentors are. You have to see it to be it. I love talking about science with high schoolers and teachers and representing women in STEMM – Science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine."

How does she feel about being a TEDxKings Park Speaker? "I'm excited! – I never thought I would have the opportunity, and I am absolutely honoured. I am nervous though, but it will be so rewarding to dissect my work and be able to talk and engage with the curious and enquiring TEDxKings Park audience."
