A massive thank you to Sreedhevi Iyer, one of our brilliant 2023 Fellows, who kindly donated two of her novels to the KSP Bookshelf Library: 'Jungle Without Water And Other Stories' and 'The Tiniest House of Time.' 🌟

📚 About 'Jungle Without Water': This debut short story collection delves into the shifting boundaries and human displacement of our era. People in these stories inhabit different stages of movement—those who have emigrated, those who want to, and those who regret it. In “The Lovely Village”, citizens of an unnamed settlement build a strong wall to keep newcomers out. In “Circular Feed”, refugees at a detention centre protest by standing on the roof of their living quarters. While in the title story, two migrant boys look for the right place to pray on foreign soil. Sreedhevi's collection touches on how we view and understand race, colour, love, and what happens to us when we shift ourselves in different environments.

📚 Blurb for 'The Tiniest House of Time': An epic family saga ranging across continents and decades, from colonial Burma in the 1930s to nationalist Malaysia in the 1990s and beyond, to Hong Kong and Australia. The story is driven by Iyer’s two main characters - Susheela Sastri and Sandhya Sastri - who are grandmother and granddaughter. Sandhya visits her grandmother's deathbed after having run away from her country, her family, her love, and herself. She remembers her grandmother's stories, of a lost time in Burma, and digs deep to find truth in it. A dying Susheela, impatient with her family's pity, asks Sandhya to read to her. It opens up past events in both their lives, the family dynamics, the forbidden loves, the politics of who can be hated, when, and by whom… And what can they, as women of their times, actually do about it.

📚 You can find these amazing works on our online bookshelf, or you can check out our physical bookshelf at the KSP centre.

Thank you for these kind donations, we can't wait to read them! 📖💖

📚✨ New Blog Post Alert! ✨📚

We recently had the pleasure of hosting the incredibly talented poet and 2024/25 Emerging Writers Program participant, Elizabeth Lewis, at KSP. During her stay, she soaked up the peace and creativity of our literary community, and we're so excited to share her insights with you!

In our latest 'KSP Chats with...' blog post, Elizabeth opens up about her writing process, the inspiration she found here at KSP, and how she's navigating the exciting journey of being an emerging writer. You won’t want to miss her thoughtful reflections! 🌟

Here's a sneak peek:
How would you describe your poetic voice, and has it evolved over time?
"...I want people who think poetry isn’t for them to read my poems and think, oh, this is about me, I have felt this too. My voice as a writer is grounded in everyday moments but leaves space for wonder, for the numinous - nudging people to consider how we engage bodily with the world around us, with the realities of living with others, living with ourselves, ageing, grief, hope, big love..." ✍️💭

A massive thank you to Elizabeth for sharing her journey with us, and a big shoutout to Writing WA for making the Emerging Writers Program possible. We're proud to support Perth’s next generation of storytellers! ✨

Calling all horror writers!
Our annual Spooky Stories Competition is back, with a twist!

This year, KSP Writers' Centre are introducing three new categories, youth (13 and under) teens, (13 to 17) and adult/open (18+) and the competition for the adult category will now be open Australia-wide as well! In addition, winning and shortlisted entries will now be published in two separate anthologies, PG (youth and teen) and R+ (adult/open).

Not only will this allow for more variety, but it will also give opportunities to the hardcore horror writers of Australia to let loose and unleash their inner dark side in the new R+ anthology, with the even higher word count allowing for ALL the gory details.

Our 2025 theme: 'The Call'.

New word counts:
Youth = 500 words (PG)
Teens = 1000 words (PG)
Adult = 2500 words (R+)
