Avoid the Summer Slide!

‘Summer Slide’ refers to children's loss of learning over the long holiday break. This can be detrimental to children who have made gains in their reading over the previous year. Keeping children reading and being read to over the holidays lessens the effects of this.

Sally Sutton has created two memorable new characters for Sunshine Books - Big Mess Jess, the bun-addict on four legs, and Jet Pack Jack, the jet-packing boy who always saves the day despite some crash landings along the way.

Sally sat down for a chat with Sunshiner Jude Tabuteau and spilt the beans on writing decodable books, how she invented the characters, her favourite scenes from the books, tips for young readers and lots, lots more. This 26-minute interview is packed with fascinating insights into the mind of a writer and Sally’s trademark wit and enthusiasm are evident throughout. A must watch for anyone interested in the process of writing.
