James Randall Freud emerged as a significant figure in Australia's rock scene during the 1980s. His musical journey began in his teenage years, forming bands like Sabre and Teenage Radio Stars, where he collaborated with guitarist Sean Kelly. In 1982, Freud joined Models as the bass guitarist, reuniting with Kelly. He contributed to the band's success with hits such as "Barbados" and "Out of Mind, Out of Sight," the latter reaching number one on the Australian singles chart in 1985.
Beyond his work with Models, Freud pursued solo projects, releasing albums like "Breaking Silence" in 1980 and "Step into the Heat" in 1989. He also explored other musical ventures, including forming the dance group Beatfish with Martin Plaza in 1992. His autobiographies, "I Am the Voice Left from Drinking" (2002) and "I Am the Voice Left from Rehab" (2007), candidly detailed his struggles with alcoholism and his journey towards recovery.
Tragically, Freud's life ended on 4 November 2010 in Melbourne. His contributions to Australian music, both as a solo artist and as a member of Models, have left a lasting legacy in the nation's rock history.
