Starlink provides high-speed, low-latency broadband internet across the globe.

Using advanced satellites in a low orbit, Starlink enables video calls, online gaming, streaming, and other high data rate activities that historically have not been possible with satellite internet. Users can expect to see download speeds between 100 Mb/s and 200 Mb/s and latency as low as 20ms in most locations.

The Australian Government implemented a satellite service to provide viewers with access to digital television where they are unable to obtain adequate reception of their licence area television services. The Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service provides viewers living in regional areas of Australia access to the same number of free-to-air digital television channels that are available to people in the cities.

Satellite is the most effective way of providing a service to all those viewers who live outside the coverage of the terrestrial network.

The VAST platform features channels carrying programs sourced from Southern Cross Seven, Imparja Nine and the Ten network, and the main national broadcaster services, ABC1 and SBS ONE, together with digital channels ABC2, ABC3, SBS TWO, 7TWO GO! and Eleven, the high definition channels ABC News 24 HD, SBS HD, ONE HD, 7mate, and, GEM.

The service also provides viewers with access to the local regional news services currently broadcast by the commercial broadcasters in their relevant terrestrial licence areas. These services are provided on dedicated channels. In addition, the news services of the national broadcasters, the ABC and the SBS, are also provided. ABC News is provided through ABC1 on a state basis.

Check mobile phone tower impact on TV reception

If you have the right TV antenna and equipment for your location, you should not get interference from mobile phone transmission tower.

Sometimes existing or new mobile phone stations can cause TV reception problems. You may get a sudden change to TV reception quality on all channels due to signal overload.

Signal overload

Signal overload may give you pixelation on all channels or no TV reception.

Signal overload from the mobile station is more likely if you are within 1km of a station and have a signal amplifier. You may also get signal overload if:


TV signals in your area are UHF not VHF
there are low TV signal levels with high levels of mobile signal at the same time
your antenna is pointing towards the mobile station
your antenna is old, damaged or has the wrong settings
Check your equipment

Check that you have the right TV antenna and equipment for your location. Check that your TV is tuned to the right channel frequencies for your location.

Signal boosters and mobile signals

Signal boosters, or masthead and distribution amplifiers, can pick up too many signals including the mobile signals causing signal overload and TV signal distortion.

Get help

Call a local antenna specialist. They will check if you have the right equipment in good condition for your location. They can also look for any causes of interference.

If the mobile station is causing signal overload, your technician may recommend:

installing a simple filter to your equipment
replacing the antenna with one that has the filter built in
removing a signal booster if not needed
move your antenna so it is less likely to pick up mobile signals

Signal boosters may cause TV reception problems

Take care using signal boosters to amplify a TV signal or send a signal to more than 1 TV. They can cause reception problems for you and interfere with other TVs in your area.

Masthead amplifier

One type of signal booster is called a masthead amplifier. It is attached to your antenna to amplify the weak signal if you are a long way from the transmitter or if tall buildings, mountains or trees get in the way of your TV signal. It is a small grey or black box attached to the antenna.

Signal boosters may cause reception problems

Signal boosters or masthead and distribution amplifiers can cause reception problems. They cause 3 main types of reception problems:

1. TV signal overload: high level signal makes the amplifier distort signal it is receiving.
2. Mobile phone signal overload: high level mobile phone signals, such as 4G, can make the amplifier distort the TV signal it is receiving.
3. Interference: a faulty signal booster can reradiate signal through TV antenna. This will cause interference to TVs in the neighbourhood or other communication services like mobile phones.
We recommend you seek professional help from an antenna installer to fix amplifier faults.

Get advice

Before you install a signal booster talk to a local antenna specialist to see if you need it.

You might not need a signal booster. You might need to change to an antenna that best suits your location.

Your amplifier needs to have a filter

If the antenna specialist thinks you should use a signal booster, make sure it has a filter to stop interference from mobile broadband signals. Make sure it is also set up correctly so that the gain is at the required level and it is the right amplifier for the location.

Sudden loss of TV reception?

You may experience sudden loss of TV reception on all or some TV channels. Follow these steps to work out the problem.

Step 1: check with the TV station

Check if the TV station has planned maintenance, faults or outages that will impact your location. Visit the website of the TV station or call their contact phone number.

Each TV station is responsible for the transmission of their signal and their maintenance schedules.

Step 2: check your location settings

Check if your equipment is set up for your location. You need your antenna and equipment set up for the TV transmission tower that provides the best coverage to your location.

Step 3: check your equipment

Check you have the right antenna for your location. Check it is in good condition. Do regular visual check-ups from the ground.

Check your cables and fly leads are in good condition and installed correctly. Check the connection between your wall socket and TV, video recorder or set-top box.

Check your TV receiver is tuned to the right channel frequencies for your location. Auto tune your TV to these settings. If auto tune does not improve the TV reception, manual tune your TV on your remote control.

Step 4: check for mobile phone base station impact on your TV

Sometimes existing or new mobile phone stations can cause TV reception problems. You may get a sudden change to TV reception quality on all channels due to signal overload.

Step 5: check for interference

Other signals and equipment may interfere with your TV reception.
