The family of an Indian student who suffered permanent disabilities following an alleged assault in Hobart are fighting for him to stay in Australia.

Devarshi Deka, 32, was pursuing his dream of studying accounting at UTAS before a night out left him quadriplegic with brain damage and the loss of sight in one eye.

The Greens and the community advocates have launched a petition, calling on the Premier to lobby the Federal Immigration Minister to grant Deka permanent residency.

A 24yo Lenah Valley man has been charged over the alleged assault and is expected to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in June.

Congratulations Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Dr Zelinda Sherlock. Embodiment of the wonderful and welcoming TASSIE providing equal opportunities for everyone.

Zelinda Sherlock has become the first female of Indian heritage to hold the title of Deputy Lord Mayor in Tasmania, winning a vote by Hobart Councillors tonight following the departure of Helen Burnet.

Sherlock says her role as Councillor brings her great joy and she is looking forward to taking on the Deputy Lord Mayor job.

"It is incredibly special that I come from humble beginnings, immigrating to Tasmania with my family from Fiji, and I received my Australian Citizenship in this very building in August 2000."
