Antonio Morales officially assumes role as Philippine Ambassador to Australia.

Antonio Morales, has presented his credentials to Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn AC to officially become the Philippine top diplomat in Australia.

In his remarks to Filipino community leaders in the ACT, at a cocktail reception at the Ambassador’s official residence, Morales recognised the Filipinos’ role to contributing to culture and rich tapestry of Australia.

“Let’s work together to enrich the Australia-Philippine relationship. We’re here to support the community,” Morales said.

Philippine Secretary of the National Development and Economic Authority, Arsenio Balisacan, was also present at the reception and congratulated Morales on his new role.

Morales presented his credentials to the Governor-General along with new ambassadors from Spain, Colombia and Angola.

Is it a dragon? Is it a snake? Is it just a myth?

In popular stories online or passed down by people, it is referred to as the serpent-deity—“serpent” connoting a vile creature that swallowed the moon and caused turmoil for the whole community affected by its wrath. Wow, just pure evil. In our research, it was written in the Boxer Codex that Panay was inhabited by thousands of pythons. Pythons are considered apex predators and they control the population of smaller and larger animals—they can even swallow wild boar, resembling the Bakunawa devouring the moon. Snakes were symbols of strength, rebirth, and spirituality. This can be seen in the tattoos of Panayanon warriors and even revered by Babaylans for their spiritual practices. The animistic synergy of people, flora, and fauna was beautifully intertwined even before the Spaniards arrived; we had our own language, textiles, economy, art, and rich culture.

The Babaylans (women or queers), counterparts of male leaders, maintained the balance between the growing community and the wild. Just like snakes, they guarded our forests and kept balance within the natural realm. It makes me wonder why, nowadays, when people spot a snake—even a small one—their automatic reaction is to kill it. Is it because the Bible said so? This mindset was deeply ingrained in our ancestors when the Spaniards colonized us. Now, ask yourself—who really bit us while we looked in the other direction?
