What’s the rush?
It’s National Recycling Week at Source Separation Systems Systems!
This year’s theme is Waste isn't Waste until it's Wasted
Melanie Barstow, General Manager, agrees it’s great to see the focus of recycling shif to think more about the value of resources. Consumption needs to be minimised as a priority, with recycling one of the last options.
Here are Melanie's top three tips to minimise waste...
* Purchase mindfully and reduce single use products. Embrace small changes in your routine. The few extra minutes spent waiting for fresh coffee to be made in a ceramic cup, rather than pre-ordering on the app, is a great chance to catch up on industry news and engage with the community 😊
* Review your landfill (waste) stream and identify additional recovery streams. If you collect uncontaminated streams of consistent material, it’s often possible to donate or even recycle. If you are in manufacturing or services, challenge your business to think about product stewardship and how you can play a role in assisting your customers to donate and recycle. Source Separation Systems' Recycling Hubs are a great example, with businesses customising them for their unique streams, such as Clinical Spaces collecting glasses for donation, and items such as tablet blister packs and X-rays for recycling.
* Buy recycled content and help drive Australia’s circular economy. Every dollar you spend is a powerful vote for the type of products and packaging you want to see in our world. If we want recycling to increase, it needs to be commercial and that is driven by the demand for ‘waste’. Prioritise recycled over recyclable!
