OG Tinny host Rob Smith, and long time Tinny producer Beard came into the ABC studio to sing Meter Long Barra one last time for ABC Radio Darwin listeners, with featured vocals from some of the ABC Darwin News crew. 🎤🎶

The lyrics were written by Rob and are sung to the tune of Elvis Presley's Viva Las Vegas. 🕺

Jo’s annual Roper trip went well, including this 111cm stonker (she may have said the words “I don’t wanna do it!” mid-fight, but that’s ok 🤣). Taylor Swift tunes pumping gave her the real edge though. “If doof-doof gets the boof-boof”, she says “then Tay-Tay gets the pay-day.” 🎵

Darwin might seem a strange place to learn to how to spearfish. 🐟

The visibility is rarely more than five metres. There’s the boxxies & the crocs & sharks. But for Eliza it’s a window into another world that's worth it. “If I die, I’m dying doing what I love,” she says. “And I’m not gonna stop cos I'm scared.”

The species on offer (such as trout and goldies) aren’t too bad either. 🍽🍻

🐟🐟What role has Tinny played in your life over the years? 🐟🐟

Some sad news fishos. 2023 will be the last for Tales from the Tinny.🎻

We’ll be wrapping at the end of the year, basically because… it’s time. We’ve had an incredible run – some 17 years – not thanks to us but entirely to you. To all of you who’ve graced the halls of Tinny over the years, since two over-enthusiastic and totally naïve fishaholics stepped up to the mic in 2006, essentially with one goal: to share a froffy and a waffle with like-minded Territorians.

So we’re choosing to kill this thing humanely rather than let it flap about unceremoniously on the deck dying a long slow death.

The longevity of the Tinny is a phenomenon, and testament to your enduring support, passion and humour, fishos. And we’ve been bloody privileged to do it.

It’ll be just shy of 800 episodes by the time we wrap it on December 15 – a disgusting amount of fishing-related irreverence! And an unacceptable number of times people have been instructed to “GETAMULLETUPYA!” 🤭

So we’re sad to go but wanna celebrate what the Tinny is, and want your input for the last few shows. What role has the Tinny played in your life (for better or worse) over the years?

🌞DESERT TOWNS FACE OFF IN FISHING COMP!? 🐟

Yep. Every two years the Alice Springs Outback Anglers & the Tennant Creek Fishing Club have a comp at King Ash Bay. You might think that proximity alone would give TC the advantage (being a mere nine hours from the coast vs Alice’s 14).

But there’s another factor that saw them take the win. “Yeah the Alice mob haven’t got many progeny,” says club pres Greg Maguire. “Desert musta got to ‘em a bit. They gotta get better at breedin’”. 🤷‍♀️

Darwin’s Tony O’Malley uses this one Clouser fly to catch everything from bream and barra to flatties and fingermark. “You got 100 other lures in your tackle box”, he says. “But do ya use em? What are the rest doing in there? Nothin’, right!”🤷‍♂️

The Melville’s fished last weekend as part of the Max’s Cast for a Cure comp, and besides each nabbing the coveted Grand Slam they found some solid jewies. Daryl’s (rather shocked) fish went 120 but hats off to eight-year-old Daly for landing a 90 in the shallows. Nice work team. 🤸‍♂️🎉👊

As part of Groote Eyelandt Ladies Fishing comp, the local CWA ran a “best spread” category. Won by team 'Ken’s Beaches' in all its exuberant pink-ness 💗.

Our personal favs were this tackle tray of nibbles… closely followed by the watermelon shark. (honourable mention though to the word “Spread” made of biccies cheese and red capsicum.🤣)
