THE use, supply and manufacture of engineered stone will be banned in NSW from July 1 after Safe Work Australia found there was no safe level of silica in the product.
Rates of silicosis and silica-related diseases in Australian workers have risen substantially in recent years, with a disproportionate number of diagnoses among engineered stone workers.
Eurostyle Stone Bankstown owner Ismil said he saw the changes coming and made the switch to porcelain and natural stone a few years ago.

RETAIL Drinks Australia is ensuring liquor stores are ‘Safe to Serve’, with the launch of a national initiative to better protect its 75,000 strong workforce, with bottle shop operators praising the move.
A Liquorland Greenacre staff member said there was good security at the store and as such, it had been a long time since any incidents of theft.
Bankstown Bottler has had only one theft in the last month.
“It helps that we’re inside the shopping centre, it just give us added security,” he said.
BWS Revesby said theft was not an issue for them, while Liquorland Padstow said they often had “a few cans walk out the door”.
Premix King Punchbowl said they had a robbery last week when “some kids ran off with alcoholic Solo”
Likewise BWS Bass Hill has only had a few minor thefts lately.
“But whatever can be done for even more security, is a good thing,” he said.

THE December edition of the Automotive Insights Report (AIR) says the average time it takes to sell a used car is increasing over time – which could mean a discounted price and win for the buyer.
Anthony Motors Padstow salesman John Simpson said that while it is a fantastic time to go used car shopping, it’s important to remember that “you get what you pay for”.
The sales team at My Car Choice Greenacre agreed.
“Most people are focused on holidays or getting children back to school and don’t have as much to spend because of rising rents and mortgages,” a salesman said.

ELIGIBLE patients will no longer have to pay for vaccines at their local community pharmacy under the National Immunisation Program (NIP).
The Pharmacy Guild of Australia says that up until January 1, eligible patients for the NIP, faced an administration fee if they received their vaccination at a community pharmacy, but this has changed.
Praising the initiative as providing more choice for patients, Barone Pharmacy Chullora pharmacist Mario Barone said the move would also free up doctors more.

FORMER Bulldogs and many of their fans turned out at Twin Willows Hotel at Bass Hill to celebrate two birthdays – the pub’s 59th birthday and Bulldogs great Geoff ‘Robbo’ Robinson’s 66th, just before Christmas.
Robbo has been battling throat and tongue cancer and organiser and owner of the Twin Willows, Arthur Laundy, said the amazing turnout on the night was evident of the support he has in the community and football world.
“It was a great night, and to blow the candles out with my closest buddy (Robbo) gave me a great thrill,” he said.

YAGOONA Community Centre (pictured) will remain closed after it was damaged by a suspicious fire early Sunday morning.
Firefighters were called to the building about 1.47am and extinguished the blaze at the back of the building which engulfed the rear deck, stopping it spreading to the rest of the building.
Police and firefighters are investigating the incident, which is being treated as a suspected act of vandalism.
Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said he was “saddened to hear about the fire”.
“This centre is a meeting hub for the local community and many will be affected by its closure,” he said.
“Any type of vandalism which impacts on our residents will not be tolerated and we will be working closely with police to stamp it out.
“Anyone who may have seen or heard anything in that area late Saturday night or Sunday morning are encouraged to contact police.”
