Asbestos in mulch? Mardi Gras Fair Day canceled. Here’s the risk! Mulch containing asbestos was found in Vitoria Park, home have Mardi Gras Fair Day and 41 other locations across New South Wales, including Sydney parks, schools, hospitals, a supermarket and at least one regional site.

Here’s what we know about the risk to public health of mulch contaminated with asbestos, including “friable” asbestos, which has been found in one site (Harmony Park in Surry Hills).

Putin greatest critic Alexei Navalny has died in jail under suspicious conditions.

During his presidential campaign, Navalny said he would repeal the gay propaganda law. He was ultimately barred from running in the election due to a controversial corruption charge which international courts have ruled illegitimate.

President Vladimir Putin’s most vociferous critic, he was serving 19 years on extremism charges that were widely seen as politically motivated.

Navalny was moved to one of Russia’s toughest penal colonies late last year. His wife Yulia has appealed to the international community “to help punish this regime”.

The Russian government has warned Russians not to join any protests as several people were detained both in central Moscow and in other cities including St Petersburg.

Navalny, 47, was last seen only one day before his death, looking well and laughing during a court hearing via video link.

Greece has become the first Orthodox Christian country to legalise same-s*x civil marriage, despite church and religious conservative opposition.

Sydney : Despite community calls to move or reschedule the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras Fair Day doing so is “nigh-on impossible”, according to SGLMG CEO Gil Beckwith.

Fair Day, scheduled for Sunday, 18 February was cancelled following the discovery of bonded asbestos in Victoria Park.

In a report from the Australian Associated Press, Beckwith explained, “We’re also putting on a 17-day festival which starts on Friday. There’s a lot going on, so for us to pivot to a new space within a few days is pretty well, nigh-on impossible.”

SGLMG reiterated this in a statement, saying, “We appreciate all the offers we’ve received to host Fair Day in other parks and venues.

“However, putting on an event the size of Fair Day takes many months of planning, logistics and coordinating of stakeholders – something that is just not possible to arrange during the next 17 days.“

Organisers of the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras have announced the festival’s Fair Day event this Sunday will be cancelled due to asbestos concerns.

The event was set to take place in Victoria Park in Camperdown, where mulch containing bonded asbestos was discovered on Monday.

Fair Day is one of the Mardi Gras festival’s largest events, attended by over 70,000 people each year.

The City of Sydney said that after further investigations, it has become clear that an event of that scale cannot take place in the park this weekend.

Watch: Polish TV host issues apology over state media’s anti-LGBTQ+ broadcasts

A host on Polish state television has apologised on air for homophobic propaganda aired by state media.

During the eight years of rule by the national conservative Law and Justice party, state media promoted the party’s line that LGBTQ+ people were threats to Polish families.

The approach has changed under a new centrist government led by Donald Tusk, who moved quickly to eject the Law and Justice supporters from positions of power over state media.

Two LGBTQ+ activists were invited on air on Sunday evening (11 February) when the state TVP host Wojciech Szeląg apologised to them for the rhetoric directed at their community.

Drag returns to Tennessee after Anti-Q***r bill repealed. After losing in court the city of Murfreesboro, Tennessee will pay $500,000 USD and repeal its “anti-LGBTQ+ ordinance” in a settlement over its denial of event permits to the local Tennessee Pride Festival where performers appeared in drag.

UK: FUSE NUMBERS : did you know that 16% of secondary school teachers in the UK are “not very comfortable” discussing LGBTQIA+ topics in the classroom, according to new research by Just Like Us, the LGBTQIA+ young people’s charity.

The research was independently carried out by Teacher Tapp, a daily survey app for teachers, and asked 6,094 teachers in December 2023: “How comfortable do you feel discussing LGBT+ topics with your pupils?”

This same question was previously asked in 2012 to 4,200 secondary school teachers.

According to the research, a teacher’s “comfort level” depends on their seniority within the schooling structure. This was demonstrated with 92 per cent of head teachers “completely” or “mostly” comfortable discussing LGBTQIA+ topics.

This was a 7 per cent increase from 2021.
