In this episode of Listening to Canberra Voices, we talk to Casey O’Neil, a First Nations student here at the University of Canberra. She shares her experiences as a Larrakia woman growing up in Ngunnawal Country as well as her own. Casey describes some of her favourite sacred sites, what makes them sacred and their importance to First Nations peoples. She talks about the impact they have on Indigenous identities and their connection to the sacred sites within both traditional and non-traditional landscapes. Some of these sites, particularly Uluru, are under threat from tourism and gas projects. Casey explains some of these issues and why the protection of sacred sites is an important part of First Nation peoples’ initiatives and ways of life in order to preserve their culture.

An interruption to a casual game of golf for Blake Macdonald ended up being an influential moment in his cricketing career. The then-17-year-old was in the middle of a round when he answered a call from Trent Copeland. The former test fast bowler, who was also the club captain of St George in Sydney, had an opportunity for the teenager from Canberra. The problem was Macdonald was unaware who he was talking to. In recent years the news media landscape has been very unstable, with changes in media ownership and the financial downturn during the Covid-19 Pandemic both heavily contributing. Much of the turbulence has been felt in local and regional news. Following the merger between Nine and Fairfax, Australian Community Media bought the Fairfax stable of 160 regional papers and began the shift to online subscription, and News Corp stopped the print editions of around 100 regional papers. As The Owl's Aiden Rothnie explains, each of these changes led to job losses, closures and contractions, and disruption to loyal audiences.

Since 1901, Parliamentary sittings have been opened with a reading of the Lord’s Prayer.
