“As she entered the walled space, Francesca was intrigued by the smaller, secret places behind the semi-circular gardens.
Each was hidden directly from view by the draping leaves of overhanging trees.
‘Beautiful,’ Francesca whispered, her eyes shining with delight and intrigue. ‘Nicholas …’
‘I’m glad you like it,’ he said, smiling at her again. ‘Of course, there is the canal entrance, but I think this is better.’
Francesca nodded.
He watched her, absorbing all the detail and feeling of his Venetian home.
‘The house is not finished. It’s no Palladio, but it will do for now. Would you like to see it?’
‘Yes,’ she replied.
Iron gates defined the beginning of a second, smaller interior courtyard that led to a large room that was sparsely furnished.
‘The garden is more complete than the house,’ Francesca thought, her eyes adjusting to the warm glow coming from the ornate fireplace, the empty bookshelf and the single leather chair facing it.”
