CROQUET is a game possibly deriving from the time of pharaonic Egypt or Mycenaean Greece. Its more recent origins are from a game known as "pell mell" or "Paille Maille" or "pall mall". This game developed in 16th or 17th Century France, but more of that later.

Croquet has been popular since the middle of the 19th century and has appeared in art, literature and the cinema in more recent times. One of the most well known literary allusions is in "Alice In Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll. Alice plays croquet against the Queen of Hearts, using flamingos for mallets and hedgehogs for balls.
