More than four decades today Gwen Grover lost her life.

A victim of domestic violence, her death was made to look like a su***de.

The su***de ruling was recently overturned by the District Court thanks to the relentless efforts of her sister Sue Cole.

Sue often jokes that Gwen would tell her to stop making such a fuss, but undoubtedly, she'd also be so proud and touched by her sister's love and devotion.

From Sue:

In Loving Memory of My Beautiful Sister Gwen
Forty-two years ago today, we lost you—and not a day has passed that I haven’t thought of you.
Your light, your laughter, your love… all remain etched in my heart.
I will never forget you. And I will never stop fighting for your memory, your truth, and your legacy.
On days like today, I find comfort in the words of one of your favourite songs that always brings me closer to you:

"In the twilight glow I see
Blue eyes crying in the rain
When we kissed goodbye and parted
I knew we’d never meet again

Someday when we meet up yonder
We’ll stroll hand in hand again
In a land that knows no parting
Blue eyes crying in the rain"

Song by Willie Nelson

In case you haven't seen it yet, please tune into our latest episode. It may seem like a final episode, but the door is always ajar. You can never close it completely https://omny.fm/shows/shot-in-the-dark/14-into-the-light Thank you Sue for being you. You've moved the proverbial mountains. It takes an extraordinary amount of will, passion, determination, courage and humility to achieve what you have. You're a role model for a better society, where all lives, and deaths, are equal.

"They always tell someone". That's what Former homicide detective Ron Iddles told Sue Cole; that killers always tell at least one person what they've done. Sue issues an emotional plea for that person to come forward and say what they know about the man she believes murdered her sister, Gwen Grover....

Raising Awareness: DFV

From Gwen's sister Sue Cole: May is Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) prevention month.
DFV affects people across all backgrounds. While many victims show incredible strength in escaping abuse, for some, like Gwen, the attempt ends in tragedy. An estimated 80% of women do not report DFV, and countless more suffer in silence.
The Red Rose Foundation’s Red Bench initiative places red benches in public spaces as a visible reminder of the ongoing crisis of domestic and family violence (DFV) in Australia.
A red bench now stands on Lake Street in Cairns, near the site where Gwen was tragically found dead in her car in 1983. It honours her memory and symbolises the many lives lost to DFV—a silent epidemic that continues to claim a woman’s life every four days.
We must all take action to end DFV—by raising awareness, rejecting victim-blaming, and urging our legal systems to respond with courage and justice. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “To ignore evil is to become an accomplice to it.”
Although the 2024 court ruling overturned the original finding in Gwen’s case, the fight for a full inquiry continues. The Queensland Coroner now has a chance to right this wrong.
