My story and why I chose to be a Designers VA

If you got here, it's because you're just as curious as me, and you're finding out all the little details of who's on this side of the screen.

Design, a word so wear down these years, is part of everyone's daily life. Everything around us is Design since it was thought and refined by someone. However, social networks and digital media have put the term "of Design" in vogue, as if there were things that are design, and others that aren't.

Within these laps, I was born into a family that revolved around design, grandfather imprinter, uncle architect, and uncle graphic designer. But like everyone else, I was also deceived by the fantasy that design and creativity are a moment where "your little light turns on" and you don't have to think or try. The idea came to our head finished and we just have to transfer it to paper. As I never had a moment like this (did anyone ever have?) I grew up thinking that I didn't know how to design, that creativity was not for me, that I was going to have to work in something more "mechanical", more formal. Boring.

But after wandering for a couple of careers (blacksmith workshop, Lawer) chasing comfort and money, and with 23 years on my back, I made the right decision, the one that luckily more and more people make in their life, each one at the moment what you can: I chose what I wanted to do.

In 2013 I went to a Ted’X event and spent a whole day listening to the speakers. There were two that were etched on my retina. One of them is Santiago Siri, founder of "The Network Party" (link), which develops software with which he plans to replace the traditional political system where we elect the representatives, to support another of direct election: each person from their cell phone votes according to your opinion on each topic.

And Gustavo Restrepo, a Colombian architect and urban planner who was involved in the redevelopment of Medellin, the model city of the world where Pablo Escobar had instituted violence. Even today I am surprised that, although I was always passionate about technology, Gustavo captivated me the most. For whatever reason, I decided to study architecture.

But to study, I had to work. I had a very good job, but with an expiration date: selling advertisements in a print magazine (my grandfather's, remember?). Social networks eroded a part of it, and the downward spiral of the Argentine economy did the rest. I got suffering a couple of years ago knowing that the only alternative to that job to continue studying was informal jobs in the capital, poorly paid, not valued by the "boss". I knew that if I ended with that option it was the end of my dignity.

But the internet took my old job and brought me a new one. Virtual Assistants. When I heard it for the first time, I couldn't believe it: being a Latin American, hearing that he was charging US$15 / hr minimum for tasks of all kinds as "secretary" of entrepreneurs, other companies or bloggers are crazy. But it is an opportunity that I am going to take advantage of.

Due to my training in architecture, over the years I was assimilating different soft skills that are very useful for designers and creatives with whom I can work: you learn to manage time, resources, plan, deal with clients, receive feedback without shaking the face, make corrections without feeling criticized.

In the end, everything is Design, and then we specialize in a specific industry: architecture, graphic design, industrial design, web design.
