Gray's Farm resident, Taji Bright, faces a hefty financial penalty or a year behind bars.

Bright, who was caught with both cannabis and co***ne at V.C. Bird International Airport on May 30, has been fined a total of $25,000, which she must pay within two years or face imprisonment.

The woman, represented by defence attorney Wendel Alexander, appeared before Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel and pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including possession of co***ne and cannabis and being involved in their supply.

However, she denied charges of drug trafficking and possession with intent to transfer.

The court heard how Bright, en route to Montserrat, triggered an alarm at the airport security checkpoint.

A thorough search revealed 1.4 pounds of cannabis hidden under her breast and 42.5 grams of co***ne concealed inside her va**na.

Bright, who works as a sanitation worker at the Ministry of Health and has a 12-year-old daughter, admitted she was trying to make some money.

Magistrate Emanuel, following sentencing guidelines, reprimanded and discharged the woman for the possession offences but imposed a $15,000 fine for the supply of co***ne and a $10,000 fine for the supply of cannabis.

The court noted Bright's cooperation and guilty plea but could not overlook the severity of her offences.

Judah Francis, 24, Devon Burton, 24, and Jahquan Davis, 22, have been remanded to prison following their first court appearance.

The men face charges of illegal firearm and ammunition possession, with Francis also charged with dangerous driving.

Burton and Davis pleaded not guilty, while Francis admitted guilt to most charges, only denying a charge of attempting to use a firearm in the furtherance of an offence.

Police say they seized guns, ammunition, and masks from the vehicle the defendants were travelling in near Factory Playing Field last week, suspecting them of planning criminal activities.

The trial is set for September 23.

BRAZIL: Thousands of women protested on Saturday against a proposed bill in Brazil's conservative Congress that would classify abortions after 22 weeks as homicide, with sentences of six to 20 years in prison. Currently, abortion is permitted in Brazil only in cases of r**e, fetal deformation, or when the mother's life is at risk. Feminist groups criticized the bill for imposing harsher penalties than those given to rapists in Brazil.
