Today is World Refugee Day, an international day initiated by the United Nations to not only honor the strength and courage of people forced to flee their home countries, but also to bring global attention to the rights and needs of refugees.

The UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency defines 'forced displacement' as people displaced ‘as a result of persecution, conflict, generalized violence or human rights violations.’ People may also be driven from their homes by natural disasters and by poverty.

Afghanistan through the Lens of Local Photographers (24th May to 21st June, 2023)
Each week, a photographer from Afghanistan will present their work and discuss their experiences and perspectives doing photography in Afghanistan. The aim of the public lecture series, which is arranged in cooperation with the Afghanistan-based Visual Storytelling Agency Angoor Visuals Angoor , and the Berlin University Alliance (BUA), is to question visual representations of Afghanistan’s recent history and the role (neo)colonialism, racism, and orientalism play in visual methodologies. By turning to the work of local photographers, photography can be understood in terms of self-representation and as an act of agency. Following a presentation (max. 45 mins.), there will be a Q&A and discussion round (max. 45 mins.).

Time: Wednesdays 16.15-17.45
Place: Institut für Asien- und Afrikawissenschaften, Invalidenstr. 118, Room 507

For some people, motorcycle is a way to do sport, for others, it is for fun, but for this group of Syrian riders, the meaning of a motorcycle is beyond that.

Since more than 3 years, the Syrian riders group, located mainly in the Syrian capital Damascus, is using their vehicles as a mean for delivering some social and humanitarian services, and during the holy month of Ramadan, they collaborate with a charity kitchen, to go each day and distribute tens of hot meal to some of Damascus most vulnerable outskirts. “We aim to change the stereotype of bike riders in Syria, that they don’t have any sense of responsibility, and we consider this service as a vital part of our life”, they say.

i accompanied the riders in one of their tours, and talked to many of them, about what they are doing in Ramadan, and the main concepts behind it.
I feel responsible for any movement that aims to break the stereotypes in my country, whether cyclists or other activities that are still being subjected to stereotypes and harassment from the state and society

“My project talks about loss of memory, our culture and identity fading away.” - Mohamed Mahdy

‘Here, The Doors Don’t Know Me’ by Mohamed Mahdy, was selected by the independent global jury as the winner of the World Press Photo Open Format Award in the 2023 Contest.

This web-based project explores the effects of rising seas on the local community in Al Max, a fishing village situated along the Mahmoudiyah canal in Alexandria, Egypt. For generations, its residents have lived and worked on the canal that leads to the Mediterranean Sea.

In 2020, the Egyptian government began evicting parts of Al Max and relocating people to housing several kilometers away from the canals, not only demolishing homes, but also endangering the collective memories and local culture embedded in the neighborhood. The stories featured here speak to the precarity of people everywhere striving for recognition amid global economic and environmental upheaval.

On a visit to Afghanistan in 2020, I learned about Zohra and I wanted to capture essence of its members and their instruments. When I first approached them, there was a direct threat against the school and COVID19 was raging.
Access was difficult or near impossible. We stayed on this idea for months and followed up as often as I could. This year, months before the Taliban took over Kabul, we finally got to visit ANIM and photograph these brave young musicians.
I hope that you see their spirit and courage in this photographs. This project is a tag team with , who himself was a former concert violinist! A very special thanks to Fatima and Khwaga, whose support made this project possible.

Hafiz by Sabiha Çimen. Winner of the Paris Photo-Aperture First Photobook Award.

Sabiha Cimen spent three years photographing Girl Quran Schools in five cities in Turkey, a subject that she knows very well since she attended the same schools when she was a teenager with her twin sister. After becoming a photographer, she returned to those schools to work on her project that has now become the subject for her first book. The title Hafiz refers to one who has memorized all 604 pages of the Holy Quran. Historically the task of memorization began during the time of Muhammad. The individual process can take up to four years and is usually done by girls ranging in age from eight to nineteen. Turkey has thousands of Quran schools. This world has never been captured with so much intimacy before, as only Sabiha can do, because she is part of this culture. Every photo reveals a different aspect and gives us a deeper understanding of the daily life and the dreams of these girls.
Sabiha Cimen, 2020 Magnum nominee, is the receipient of W. Eugene Smith Memorial Grant in 2020, Lightwork Artist Residency in 2021, World Press Photo - Long Term Project award in 2020.

War magnifies the world's pain. Although the war is against destruction, in the end it fills the earth with pain in a different way. Even if war is the ultimate justice, it will always fill the earth with sorrow.

"Red on Red" / Kiana Hayeri
3 years ago around this time, I photographed 18
Afghan women in Kabul on an assignment for
(thanks to ).
18 women confidently posing against colorful backdrops each of them carefully chose. 18 women from all walks of life talked about their dreams, their fears and their concerns "if Taliban were to regain power"
When asked 'what would be the biggest loss, Masooma (32) responded: "Hope for a better future would be the biggest loss."
I've lost that hope too. Better times may arrive to this land one day but for now it's far out of reach.

- Stories: ‘The Cinema of Kabul’ by Bram Janssen, the Netherlands, The Associated Press

A Radio for Women in Taliban Country

Founded before the Taliban came to power, the local radio station set out to promote the education of Afghan girls and women. In spite of the constraints, it continued to operate after the return of the Taliban.
Founded by Hamida Aman, a Swiss-Afghan journalist and entrepreneur committed to defending women's rights in Afghanistan, Radio Begum (au gul,) was created in March 2021, five months before the Taliban returned to power: "When they came back in August 2021, we had concerns. But they finally gave us permission to broadcast," says Hamida Aman.
To continue broadcasting, the medium bypasses political issues to focus on the education of Afghan women and girls. It offers programs on mental health - which is still a taboo subject in Afghanistan -, debates on women's rights in society, poetry competitions and courses for girls in secondary schools. Most of the employees, journalists and management, are women. Some men work as technicians.
In a nearby studio, small voices can be heard in unison:
"They are recording a Dari class that will be broadcast tomorrow," says Saba Chaman. This program is now the beating heart of Radio Begum. Every day, a handful of 12-year-old students come to the media studio with a teacher to record lessons. This is vital at a time when the Taliban has closed schools for Afghan girls at the secondary level.gil_ / Angoor
