I was going through some of my old interviews on podcasts over the last few years and just came across this one - this was one of my favorites done in 2023, I believe, with Ben Pavliha. We're both in the UAE when this was recorded, so we speak to the Middle East Expat drinking culture in this video a lot. You can watch it here!

Alex McRobert, also known as Sober Yoga Girl, is helping women around the world transform their lives. She runs yoga retreats, yoga teacher trainings, she co...

You know youā€™re good when you can do it with a broken heart šŸ’” šŸ˜‰

Just kidding, my heart is not broken to be here šŸ¤£ā¤ļø. Though it is a bit broken in empathy for all the Vienna Swifites.

I forgot how many friends I have in London. A fun fact about me when I got sober, is that there were no online sobriety communities in the Middle East, so I joined the closest one which was started by two guys in London. Whilst people were in that group from around the world, the majority were definitely in the UK. I posted in the FB group almost daily, and thus built my friendships with a bunch of strangers in this country šŸ¤£. Since then from working in Bali, Iā€™ve met lots of more people from the UK in the last three years too.

I came last December to finally meet in person but I only had 24 hours so it was a brief visit, not enough time to see everyone. Iā€™m sooo excited for all the hangouts and meetups Iā€™ve already planned for this week!

If youā€™re here in London I would absolutely LOVE to have you join my pop up yoga class & workshop, Return to Love, on Saturday at 9:00am in Brixton! It is now half sold out so make sure you snag your spot asap before theyā€™re all gone. I cannot wait to spend time with you!

If youā€™re not in London but still wanna hang this week Iā€™m offering the same class & workshop online on Saturday at 2pm British time (6am California, 9am Toronto, 5pm Dubai.) Iā€™m also doing an Eras Tour Barre tomorrow !!! At the same time.

What a wild journey. Iā€™m just stepping back & allowing God to lead the way. šŸ‡¬šŸ‡§ā¤ļø

2. Return to Love: 6am mst/9am est/ 2pm bst/ 5pm GST
It is said that the Buddha sat in meditation long enough to become aware that certain thoughts led to his freedom and certain thoughts led to his suffering. Often our thoughts of desiring to control the outcome lead to disappointment when things donā€™t manifest as planned. My teacher Rolf taught me that a loving heart provides protection from the suffering caused by unskillful mind states. How do we come to a state of love and appreciation where weā€™re protected from suffering? There are two fundamental spiritual practices in the yoga sutras that speak to this - abhyasa which is practice, or putting in the work - and vairagya which is renunciation, or letting go. In this online yoga class and workshop weā€™ll explore what it means to embody these aspects of yoga - wise effort (abhyasa) and wise concentration (vairagya). We can think of the skills of wise effort and wise concentration as the return to love, and the return to a possibility of an open heart. When weā€™re in a contracted mind state we close ourselves off. And when the mind goes quiet, we can listen once again to the whisper of the heart.

This retreat is $40 if you sign up today (earlybird!) and $50 regular price!

31/07/2024

I was sitting in Jakarta airport in October 2017, about to fly to Abu Dhabi to step into my new job at an International Private School when I received a DM. It was from someone who ran the alumni newsletter at my High School, who wanted to feature me as an ā€œAlumni Success Story.ā€ I remember thinking, ā€œme? An alumni success story? Iā€™m a 25 year old divorcee who is constantly running away and wanted to kill herself a few months ago šŸ¤£ but okā€¦ if you say so!ā€ The proposed feature never moved forward, but what was significant to me was that they had even asked.

That moment was when I realized how warped my own self perception was. Here I was thinking I was the biggest mEsS - and others were looking at my life and considering me successful. And thatā€™s when I realized our lives make up millions of moments. And one moment, where I made a mistake, did not define me as a person.

I landed in Abu Dhabi and it was like someone was opening up the curtains on windows that had been drawn shut for a long, long time. I would describe it honestly as life after death. šŸ¤£ I wrote on one Instagram caption that every day was a miracle and everything was magic.

What I remember was for the first time in a long time, I had hope. I would get the feedback from colleagues I worked with that I was always so happy, or always so chill, and I would think, ā€œYall have no idea what I went through to get to this point.ā€ šŸ¤£

The pictures reflect this for me. Brightness. Sunrises. Sunsets. Sweetness. Simplicity.

However, all things come in twos. And with the light, came darkness. I definitely wasnā€™t telling all my colleagues that Iā€™d run away from Kuwait leaving an apartment behind full of stuff, on a sick leave and was undergoing a divorce. šŸ¤£ Minor details.

Shame and secrets make you sick, and as I got introduced to the world of all you can drink brunches and ladies nights in the United Arab Emirates, I began to slide down the drinking scale further and faster than I wanted to.

I got sober about 1.5 years after I moved to the UAE, and because it was the place where I found my true self, Iā€™ll always consider it my home. ā¤ļø

30/07/2024

Alright everyoneā€¦ the exciting news that youā€™ve all been waiting forā€¦ is the Sober Girls Yoga Magazine is making a comeback!! But, we are rebranding as the Mindful Life Magazine. The reason why is that we felt like it was more reflective of our diverse community! ā¤ļø

And with the rebrandā€¦ comes the announcement of our new Editor in Chief.

Over the last seven months I stopped creating the magazine due to really, not having the time. However, when old editions were lying around the retreat center in Bali during our YTT, we realized how valuable the magazine is - and how many people love it. ā¤ļø The obvious choice was to hire someone within the community to take it over for me. Introducingā€¦ Sarah Millman!

Sarah Millman has been part of our community since 2022. She attended the Mexico retreats in 2022 and 2023, took the online 200 hour yoga teacher training, and was an assistant teacher on the 2024 Bali July 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training. Another fun fact about Sarah is that she edited my upcoming book, Sober Yoga Girl. (And after seeing her editing skills I knew she was right for the job!)

Sarah & I have put our heads together and started brainstorming for the months ahead. But we want to hear from you! You are the amazing community that makes up our retreats, trainings and online offerings.

Sarah can now be reached at: [email protected] . So please send her any submissions. (And - if you sent me something in the last few months - please resend it there so that Sarah can include it in the upcoming September 2024 edition.)

I am so excited for this project to take flight again! Please comment on this post with a warm welcome to Sarah! ā¤ļøšŸ™šŸ»

27/07/2024

Often when Iā€™m chatting with drop-in yoga students in Bali before class, someone will ask: ā€œHow did you end up living in Bali?ā€ Iā€™ll check the clock to see if I have time for the long answer or the short answer šŸ¤£. The short answer is that I came in 2017, loved it, and then moved here after.

The long answer? In June 2017, Bali was meant to be the destination for our honeymoon. After two months of marriage, we broke up the night before the flight.

I had organized every activity, hotel and tour for our two week honeymoon. At the end of the honeymoon he was meant to fly back to Kuwait for work, and I was staying in Bali for 4 more weeks to do my 300 Hour Advanced YTT. After he left at dawn that day, I cancelled my flight. I couldnā€™t imagine going alone.

I managed to get everything cancelled and refunded - except the 300 Hour YTT. After getting a doctors note thanks to western medicine, I was able to postpone the training to September 2017.

I often describe my experience landing in Bali as the moment when Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz stopped seeing in black and white and started seeing in colour. Thatā€™s what it was for me. The plane landed in Bali and I could hear bugs buzzing, smell incense burning, feel the rain on my skin, taste the fresh fruit. Every one of my senses was alive again. When I look at photos I can literally see the life returning to my eyes again. After wanting to end my life for two months, thinking I was a terrible person who didnā€™t deserve to live anymore - finally I wanted to be here again. On planet earth. I just kept thinking to myself, ā€œThank god I didnā€™t die.ā€

I knew Iā€™d live here in Bali one day. I just didnā€™t know how. I was a school teacher and couldnā€™t see past the traditional, 9-5 job.

I moved to Abu Dhabi and started to work again. And thenā€¦I got sober. And then Covid hit. And then I lost my job as a yoga teacher in lockdown. And then I started zoom yoga. And then zoom yoga turned into App. And then I quit my job and got a one way ticket to Bali. And the restā€¦ is history. šŸ¤£šŸ™ˆ

A lot of my new book, Sober Yoga Girl, revolves around my experiences living in Kuwait between ages 23 - 25. In this blog post, I found some photos and memories to share with you of that year, from 2015 - 2016. If you want to be first to know when my book is released, head to www.soberyogagirl.com .

21/07/2024

Last night the newest group of 200 Hour Yoga Teachers graduated, and this morning at 12 noon was checkout. Certificates were already handed out and classes were officially over already, but I invited anyone who wanted to join to come over to my villa at 6:30am for my morning 108 Japa Meditation šŸ“æ with our mala beads. The practice takes about 30 minutes total but today was a delayed start with coffee, cuddles with my cat, tarot card readings and chats. It was a noticeable energy shift from the silent and serious mornings I lead in the trainings! ā¤ļø

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever been so tired as I am right now. This month was incredible and while facilitating this journey I learned a lot about myself. 21 days is a LONG time to hold a container for 16 people 24/7. This is my dream job - but it can still be hard. Iā€™m learning a lot about how to set boundaries, how to fill up my cup and whoā€™s intuition to trust (mine!)

This has been a big calendar year for me for yoga teacher trainings. In May 2023 I hosted my first ever in person YTT after 2 years of running them online. Since then Iā€™ve had the great gift to be faculty on 7 more 200 hour trainings and organize 2 more on my own. I hope that with each training I become better and better at dropping my ego, not taking things personally, loving everyone and tellling the truth. Knowing that I will always be learning and always make mistakes and have the humility to apologize when I know Iā€™m wrong.

Itā€™s my hope for these graduates that they follow their dharma and share their gifts with the world, whether they teach asana classes or just carry on into the world as the living embodiment of yoga. ā¤ļø

With every ending there is a beginning, and in the horizon is after 2.5 years of leading advanced, 300 Hour YTTS online Iā€™ll be leading my first one at the same retreat center from October 21-November 14, 2024. I expect it to be a small group (3 students registered so far) so if you wanted to dive deep with a small group of students into yoga and grow as a person and professional - this is for you! Iā€™ll also continue to lead online modules if you want to study with me at home.

Til we meet again.šŸ™šŸ»

17/07/2024

Fourteen months after I got sober, I started writing.

I had no idea what I was doing or why I was doing it.

I just knew that once I began, I couldnā€™t stop.

It felt like I was digging myself out of a deep, dark hole with every word I put on the page.

What I discovered was I actually wasnā€™t just a ā€œFormer Party Girlā€ šŸ¤£šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø but actually a girl who was really really sad and searching for solutions at the bottom of a bottle.

Step 4 of the 12 step program is to make a ā€œsearching and fearless moral inventoryā€ and writing this book was an inventory for me. What are my problems? How have they affected me and others around me? How can I proceed to recovery?

This story started out as a personal project. And then, the deeper I got into my work in sobriety, the more I realized how universal pain is. And how our stories become other peopleā€™s survival guides. And so the book took on greater meaning.

I spent one whole year working with from 2020-2021 on this. I cried and cried over zoom as she dissected my work. After we finished, I then proceeded to let the book sit on my hard drive, which Iā€™m grateful for. In that time a number of conflicts with myself and others came to conclusion that altered the way I saw the world and the message of the book.

I worked with the incredible who dissected this book yet again, and transformed it. Finally with for the final layout. Many friends read the book and gave me feedback. And finally - four years, three editors, 67 chapters and over 115,000 words - Sober Yoga Girl is almost here. ā¤ļøāœØ Itā€™s coming soon. If you want to be the first to know when itā€™s out head to www.soberyogagirl.com and drop your email.

When Taylor Swift released TTPD, she wrote on Instagram, ā€œThis period of the authors life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.ā€ ā¤ļø

13/07/2024

The shirt that Iā€™m wearing in this photo is a new shirt. it says .

On the very first night of this Yoga Teacher Training, a participant said ā€œI was really nervous about fitting in, because on the last retreat I went on I just didnā€™t feel like I belonged.ā€

I am throwing no shade on that retreat leader who led that retreatā€¦. because that retreat leader was me.

Iā€™m not surprised that participant felt the way she did and I knew, for a lot of reasons, that that retreat didnā€™t live up to my standards. Everyone still had a great time but I learned a lot from it to incorporate going forward. Building community was my primary priority going into this YTT.

After that participant said they felt they didnā€™t belong on my retreat, I led a meditation that night and one of the phrases that came to me was, ā€œYou belong here.ā€ ā¤ļø

You belong here.

And you are loved.

It is of my belief that it doesnā€™t matter what a teacher teaches you, itā€™s how they teach it. Itā€™s how they make you feel. And my number one priority on my retreats and trainings is to cultivate a sense of belonging.

And so, this shirt was born. . We all know how terrible it feels to feel like youā€™re not welcome somewhere or you donā€™t fit in.

So is our new slogan. It might just be the tagline of the retreat center I one day open.

Thank you, to the person who gave me that feedback. This shirt will forever make me think of you. ā¤ļø Were almost sold out of this shirt here in person in Bali and you can order it online at www.themindfullifepractice.com/shop with international shipping.

I loved recording this episode of Sober Yoga Girl Podcast with Emily Killeen. Emily is a sober community leader who I have collaborated with in the past, and I previously had her on the show a few years ago, when she shared her inspiring sober story. The theme of our discussion on this episode, which was recorded live in Sober Girls Club, was what it really means to be "Happy, Sober and Free" but when I reflect back on the talk, the theme that really showed up in this episode for me was having the courage to start again. When we last connected over three years ago, Emily had built up her dream of building her own retreat centre with her then husband. Since then, her husband left her, they sold the retreat centre, and she's left her entrepreneurship career to start a new career as a sober companion. What I truly admire in this episode is Emily's vulnerable share, her standing in her truth, and really demonstrating for all of us what it means to have the courage to start again.

I LOVED sitting down with Cindy Payne and recording this episode of Sober Yoga Girl Podcast together. Cindy is an absolute inspiration. When she was a few months sober, she googled alcohol free women's retreats in Bali...and that's how she ended up on the Sober Girls Yoga 2023 Bali Retreat! :) Since then Cindy has gone on to complete our Online 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training, join the India 2024 Sober Girls Yoga Retreat, and be a crucial member of our community, joining our Sunday Sober Girls Yoga Meetings. I genuinely mean it when I say Cindy is an absolutely inspiring woman and I'm sure if you listen to this show you will feel that way about her too!

In 2019, when I was newly sober I decided I needed a sober role model. I remembered that , my favourite author, wrote anecdotes about his sober journey in his book, Meditations from the Mat. I had discovered his book about nine years earlier, at the first yoga studio I worked at in 2010. I loved it so much that I bought a copy and ended up carrying it around the world with me.
I saw that he was teaching an advanced YTT in Massachusetts that lined up with my 100 days sober. So I flew from Abu Dhabi to Toronto & I drove 14 hours to be there. (I didnā€™t want to make it obvious that I was a Rolf Gates groupie so I just told him on the first night that I loved yoga workshops and thatā€™s why Iā€™d travelled around the world for the training, lol).
That week, we learned how to create a class with a theme that centred around an ordinary moment from our lives from the last 90 days. We connected that moment to yoga philosophy. Then we universalized, personalized and embodied this ordinary moment.
The night before our final project was due, I went to Rolf sobbing, saying I couldnā€™t do the project. I had two main reasons.
The first was that I was 100 days sober, and no moment from my life had been ordinary for the last 90 days. (Which I now see as an absolutely ridiculous reason to not do a project).
The second was that I felt like every idea I had, I was taking from him. I had read his book so many times I knew it by heart, and it felt like all of my ideas about yoga werenā€™t new.
He said, ā€œAlexā€¦you canā€™t be taking any of this from me, because I didnā€™t invent any of it. Do you think I invented kindness? Do you think I invented telling the truth? Yoga doesnā€™t belong to me.
Itā€™s been passed from heart to heart, through thousands of years.
My teachers passed it to me, and I pass it to you, and youā€™ll pass it to your students. And so on, and so forth.ā€
This weekend on International Yoga Day, I thought a lot about the numerous teachers around the world who have shaped and impacted my journey. So many of you lit the match that allowed me to carry the torch. Thank you for passing yoga from your heart to mine. I am forever grateful.
