Officers from the Operational Support Division (OSD) of the Sierra Leone Police have reportedly fired teargas at Mohamed Omodu “Jagaban” K**ara and his supporters during a gathering in Wellington on Sunday, January 11, 2025. According to reports, Jagaban and his supporters had assembled at the former NATCO Factory at the Wellington Industrial Estate for a charity ceremony linked to his transport business. The event was part of activities marking the unveiling of the facility as the Jagaban bus depot, ahead of the arrival of his bus fleet from China.

Eyewitnesses said police officers arrived at the venue on Sunday morning and disrupted the ceremony, leading to a confrontation that culminated in the use of teargas. The incident reportedly caused panic among attendees and forced the gathering to disperse.

The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs has come under increased scrutiny following findings in the 2024 Auditor General’s Report, which highlighted unresolved issues relating to unretired imprests and undocumented bank withdrawals amounting to more than NLe11.83 million.

According to the report, the Ministry received a special imprest of NLe6,790,750 to support the organisation of the Women in Tourism Regional Congress (WITRC). Although the event was concluded by 31 December 2024, auditors noted that retirement documentation for NLe4,900,530.36 of the funds had not been submitted. In a related finding, an additional special imprest of NLe1,054,550, provided for the Tourism for All Campaign (TFA), was also not retired, bringing the total value of unretired imprests to NLe5,955,080.36.

The Auditor General recommended that the Ministry’s Accountant provide complete retirement documentation or refund the unretired amounts to the Consolidated Fund.

A festive Athletic Sports Meet at Abbako Technical College turned tragic on Friday 9 January, 2026 after a Year Two HTC secondary student, Abdul Sesay of Red Hall, collapsed shortly after completing a relay race and was later pronounced lkpai at the Port Loko Government Hospital. According to eyewitnesses, The incident occurred during the 4×800 metres medley relay when Sesay, having successfully handed over the baton, suddenly fell to the ground moments after leaving the track. On-site medical personnel and sports officials immediately administered first aid and attempted resuscitation before he was rushed by okada to the government hospital, where doctors later confirmed his death.

The sudden incident brought the sports meet to an abrupt halt, silencing what had moments earlier been a lively celebration filled with cheers, music and competition. Students, staff and spectators looked on in shock as the atmosphere shifted from excitement to grief. Credit to Sierraloaded

The Audit Service of Sierra Leone (ASSL) has raised serious concerns over missing vehicles, motorbikes and unverified fixed assets worth more than NLe1 million at the Ministry of Health, according to its 2024 audit report.

The report states that assets valued at NLe1,224,000, which were procured in 2024 for the Hospital Inspection Programme and the Directorate of Financial Resources, were neither made available for audit verification nor recorded in the Ministry’s fixed assets register. According to the ASSL, a total of 37 vehicles and 32 motorbikes listed in the Ministry’s assets register were not presented for physical verification during the audit. In addition, ownership documents and life cards for these vehicles were not submitted for audit inspection, making it difficult to confirm their existence and legal status. Credit to Sierraloaded

The indefinite ban imposed on parliamentary journalist Melvin Tejan Mansaray from accessing the precincts of Sierra Leone’s Parliament has continued to generate serious concerns about press freedom, due process, and democratic accountability, nearly one year after the sanction was enforced. The ban was ordered on January 10, 2025, by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Solomon Segehpoh Thomas, following allegations of what was described as “insulting conduct” by the journalist.

According to a report, no evidence was publicly presented to support the allegations, nor was Mansaray given an opportunity to respond to the claims, for which critics say, amount to a clear violation of the principles of natural justice.
