TikTok Ban Takes Effect in the U.S.
As of January 19, 2025, TikTok has been officially banned in the United States. The ban stems from a law requiring ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to divest its U.S. operations or face a shutdown. ByteDance's refusal to sell led to the app becoming inaccessible to its 170 million U.S. users. Major service providers, including Apple, Google, and Oracle, have ceased supporting the app to comply with the ban.
Despite the shutdown, President-elect Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to work on a solution to reinstate TikTok. He mentioned the possibility of granting a 90-day extension after taking office, allowing more time to address the situation. However, until a resolution is reached, TikTok remains offline in the U.S.
In response to the ban, many influencers and marketers are transitioning to alternative platforms. Notably, some users are migrating to RedNote, another Chinese-owned app, as a substitute for TikTok.
